Led by experienced guides and photographers, our expedition offers an immersive and educational journey into the realm of these majestic creatures.

Within the enchanting islands of French Polynesia, our expedition takes participants on a voyage of discovery around the islands of Papeete, Moorea and the Tuamotu Islands where they will have the opportunity to witness firsthand the annual migration of humpback whales from Antarctica to the warm waters of the Pacific, as well as the famous wall of sharks in Fakarava atoll known as the biggest aggregation of grey reef sharks in the world.

Equipped with state-of-the-art research equipment, including hydrophones we delve deep into the behavior and ecology of these magnificent marine mammals.

Throughout the expedition, participants engage in a range of activities, from observing whales breaching and tail-slapping to listening to their enchanting songs beneath the waves. Our team of experts provides insightful commentary and interpretation, enriching the experience with their knowledge of whale behavior, conservation efforts, and the marine ecosystem of French Polynesia.

In addition to whale watching, our expedition offers opportunities for snorkeling, scuba diving and exploring the vibrant coral reefs and marine life that thrive in these pristine waters. Participants also have the chance to immerse themselves in the rich culture and traditions of French Polynesia, with visits to local villages and encounters with indigenous communities.

Our expedition with Unique Ocean Expeditions promises an unforgettable journey of discovery, adventure, and conservation as we explore the wonders of French Polynesia and encounter some of the most awe-inspiring living dinosaurs on our planet.

Humpback Whales & Walls of Sharks

This expedition sits right at the top of our all-time favorites — and for good reason. Nowhere else in the world can you combine close, intimate encounters with giant humpback whales in two different locations with world-class scuba diving in the Tuamotu Islands.

We start with breathtaking whale encounters in both Papeete and Moorea, giving you two unique environments, two distinct moods, and twice the chance to witness these gentle giants up close. Then we finish strong with four precious days in Fakarava South Pass, where you’ll drop into the famous “wall of 700 grey reef sharks” — one of the most awe-inspiring and humbling dives on Earth.

It’s whales, sharks, reefs, mountains, lagoons, and pure French Polynesian magic — the kind of expedition you remember for the rest of your life.

You’ll have all the essentials you need, plus the added bonus of camaraderie and shared stories that make this expedition even more memorable.

French Polynesia

French Polynesia is an overseas collectivity of France located in the South Pacific Ocean. It is composed of 118 islands and atolls, spread out over an area of more than 2,000 kilometers. The main islands include Tahiti, Bora Bora, and Moorea.

Whales, particularly humpback whales, undertake an impressive annual migration from their feeding grounds in Antarctica to the warm waters of French Polynesia. They travel thousands of kilometers to reach the region during the winter months, typically from July to November.

The primary reason for this migration is breeding and calving. The waters of French Polynesia provide a safe and sheltered environment for humpback whales to mate and give birth to their calves. The warm temperatures and abundance of food sources contribute to the health and well-being of both adult whales and their newborns.

The journey from Antarctica to French Polynesia allows humpback whales to escape the frigid temperatures of the Southern Ocean and take advantage of the favorable conditions in the Pacific for breeding and raising their young.

After spending several months in French Polynesian waters, the whales return to Antarctica to feed during the summer months when food sources are more abundant in the nutrient-rich Southern Ocean. This annual migration cycle is essential for the survival and reproductive success of humpback whales.

Swimming with Humpback Whales

Whale watching is a strictly regulated activity in French Polynesia and only accredited professionals are authorized to organize excursions. There is a distance of 100M security that must be respected, you are not allowed to swim towards the whales, they must decide to swim towards you. Being in the company of these peaceable giants is a moving experience that leaves an indelible mark on everyone who has ever had that privilege.

The only way to swim with the whales in French Polynesia is on a group excursion with a certified guide. There are many such excursions available in Tahiti and Moorea. The whales can be spotted from quite a distance due to their spouts rising high into the air.

Once the whales have been spotted, your boat will approache slowly, so as not to frighten them. Everybody puts on a mask, tuba and flippers and, on the signal from your guide, you slide into the water and swim gently, letting the whales decide if they want to come closer. One of the most wonderful aspects of swimming with whales is listening to their beautiful songs, which can carry for distances of several kilometers. Please respect these beautiful, endangered creatures. They are treasured visitors to French Polynesia, where the ancestral culture considers them to be the guardians of the ocean.

Moorea Island

After four thrilling days in Papeete, the adventure continues as we hop over to the island of Moorea — a place so stunning it feels like Mother Nature showing off. Here, we’ll head back out to sea for more intimate whale encounters, often in calmer, more sheltered waters that give Moorea its special magic. When we’re not with the whales, the island opens up a whole second chapter of adventure: scenic hikes through lush mountain valleys, emerald ridgelines that beg for a camera, and afternoons spent snorkeling with friendly blacktip reef sharks and graceful stingrays in crystal-clear lagoons.

It’s the perfect combination — wild encounters in the deep, unforgettable moments on land, and a rhythm that lets you soak in everything that makes French Polynesia one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Wall of Sharks at Fakarava South Pass

And for our final adventure: four incredible days in Fakarava, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and home to one of the greatest dives on the planet. Here, at the legendary South Pass, we descend into a world ruled by sharks — often surrounded by a breathtaking wall of 700 grey reef sharks cruising in perfect formation. It’s raw, natural, and absolutely unforgettable.

These dives aren’t just thrilling; they’re a front-row seat to one of the ocean’s most extraordinary spectacles, set in warm, gin-clear water and vibrant coral. It’s the ultimate finale to the trip — a place where even the most seasoned divers walk away humbled, buzzing, and already dreaming of the next return.

How To Approach Marina Mammals

Encounters with whales, dolphins, and other marine mammals are a privilege, and it’s our responsibility to ensure they remain safe, stress-free, and natural.

When entering the water, move slowly, calmly, and with minimal splash. Let the animals approach you — never chase, block, or dive directly toward them. Keep a respectful distance to allow them the freedom to choose the interaction. Avoid sudden movements, loud noises, or anything that could alter their behavior.

Always remember: these are wild animals in their natural environment. By giving them space and respecting their boundaries, we create the best conditions for genuine, meaningful encounters — and help protect them for future generations of ocean lovers.

Travel and Flight Essentials

Your journey begins with an international flight to Tahiti’s Faa’a International Airport (PPT), located on the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia.

This airport is served by major carriers such as United Airlines, Air Tahiti Nui, Air France, Hawaiian Airlines, and several others, with direct flights from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Auckland, Tokyo, and Paris.

We recommend arriving in Tahiti at least 24–48 hours before your expedition to allow for international flight delays, baggage issues, and a chance to rest before the expedition.

Visa & Entry Requirements

  • For EU, US, Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand passport holders: No visa is required for stays under 90 days.

  • Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your planned departure.

  • Proof of onward or return travel is required upon entry.
