About this trip

Discover vibrant Black history through the legacy of African cultures as you are welcomed to the seat of Gullah culture in Charleston, St. Helena Island and Beaufort, South Carolina and Savannah, Georgia!

The Gullah Geechee people are known for protecting, preserving, and passing on their West African culture and coastal heritage of spirituality, family, food, music, and language.

Experience part of the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor along South Carolina's coastline. This national heritage area was established to recognize the unique culture of the Gullah Geechee people who have traditionally resided in the coastal areas of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

Enslaved Africans brought a rich heritage of cultural traditions in art, food ways and music. Arts and crafts are the result of products designed by necessity for activities of subsistence and daily living such as making cast nets for fishing, basket weaving for agriculture and textile arts for clothing.

Why this Unique Experience is for You!

  • Engage in this transformative experience while supporting and helping to sustain Black-owned businesses.
  • Dive deep into Charleston’s Black heritage on an interactive, inspiring bus tour including a visitand tour of the historic Mother Emanuel AME Church.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the Gullah Geechee people when you explore James Island and Johns Island, enjoy a traditional lowcountry lunch and take part in a sweet grass weaving workshop.
  • Meet the Gullah Geechee people of St Helena Island, explore with a local guide and learn about their unique language and strong beliefs before tucking into a tasty lowcountry lunch.
  • Take part in a soul-stirring storytelling performance on St. Helena Island where storytelling and  music are used to share the experience of enslaved Africans brought to South Carolina, then share a seafood boil with the locals.
  • Travel to Savannah, Georgia, and learn about the state’s Black and Gullah heritage during in-depth tours with local experts.

The trip was cancelled at the last minute. I wasted my money on travel insurance and a cancelled flight.

Hi Carolyn, We truly apologize that you lost money from the trip cancellation. We do require a minimum to conduct a tour as we are working hard to market and secure bookings so that many can enjoy this very special experience we put our heart and soul into to amplify the Gullah Geechee history and culture. We would like to do something for your inconvenience to offset any costs you incurred due to our cancellation. Please email our Managing Director, Amit Ariel, at aariel@experienceblackculture.com so we can see how we can assist with any loss. Again, our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience of the trip cancellation.
