Caño Island Biological Reserve is located approximately 20 kilometers off the coast of the Osa Peninsula. In pre-Columbian times, the island served as a sacred burial site for the ancient indigenous peoples of the region, making it not only a natural wonder but also a place of great cultural significance.

Surrounding the island are five coral reef platforms, home to a rich variety of marine life. These reefs host numerous coral species and a wide array of tropical fish, such as parrotfish, Moorish idols, crocodile needlefish, guinea fowl puffers, cornetfish, and large schools of jackfish. You may also spot sea turtles, stingrays, moray eels, and white-tip reef sharks.

The diving license is mandatory.

The adventure begins at 7:25 a.m. with a boat departure from Drake Bay. The scenic ride to the island takes about an hour, during which you might see playful dolphins and, between August and December, even humpback whales.

Once at the island, you’ll enjoy two snorkeling or diving sessions at different sites within the protected marine reserve. A certified naturalist guide will accompany you, pointing out the most fascinating spots and helping you identify the diverse marine species you encounter.

Around noon, you’ll head to a beautiful beach—usually San Josecito—for a delicious lunch surrounded by nature. If weather conditions change, lunch may be served back in Drake Bay.

This half-day experience begins at 8:00 a.m. and concludes around 2:00 p.m., offering an unforgettable journey through one of Costa Rica’s most spectacular marine ecosystems.
