About this trip

El Cajas is a national park located on the northwestern side of the city of Cuenca. It is formed by wetlands from glacial origins with more than 200 lakes. Your visit will start on the lower part of the park called “Llaviuco”, only 30 minutes away from the city of Cuenca. You will hike on an easy pace for about one hour at an altitude of 3000 meters above sea level. You will continue your visit until you arrive to a point called “Tres Cruces” which forms the continental division between the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean at an altitude of 4135m. You will have a short walk to observe this interesting area and then you will descend and hike for approximately three hours. The difficulty at this point is moderate. On the trail, you will visit a beautiful primary forest and observe the interesting vegetation. A local lunch is included and after this you will return to Cuenca.

This trip was okay. Our guide was knowledgeable as always (we had been with him for the entire trip up until this point) and we enjoyed the market and lunch in Otavalo. The boat trip in the crater was okay, but probably not worth the length of the trip to get to the area for that to be the main focus of the trip. Overall it was an enjoyable day but we would probably try a different excursion if we were in Quito again.

The trip was well organized and our guides were very knowledgeable. We were able to snorkel with sea turtles, sea lions, rays and hammerhead sharks. The lunch provided was good and we were able to spend some time on a beach after snorkeling. Despite being a large group of snorkelers and divers, the guides were able to keep everyone together and did their best to ensure everyone had the opportunity to see whatever they were pointing out in the water.

This was a fantastic trip, particularly due to our guide. Because our guide was a marine biologist, the tour went beyond just the usual identification of different mammal and bird species, into the more complex ecological issues facing dolphins and other wildlife in this area. We were the only two on the trip aside from our guide and the boat crew and it was a wonderful experience to be in a small group in the mangroves. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone with an interest in wildlife.

Edison was a knowledgeable and personable guide, and picked the best that the Mindo area had to offer. The butterflies, the hummingbirds, and especially the chocolate factory experience, were all first rate. The waterfall is all right (bring your bathing suit if you want to spend the time), but it’s not a sufficient reason to go on the tour…

This was an ok excursion. There was a lot of wasted time to accommodate the diver certification stop and subsequent diver only parts of trip. The snorkeling, once underway, paled in comparison to a previous simple beach snorkeling that was free. Lunch was so/so. Captain and cook/ diver guide were so nice, but other!?! Next time I’ll find and book in own with more discretion! Lot of boat time with little quality snorkeling and crowded as we picked up to extra FM’s on the dock!?!
