Highlights Include:
The Burren is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique karst landscape, which features limestone slabs and channels formed by water erosion over long periods. The name "Burren" is derived from the Irish word "boíreann," meaning "rocky place." Covering an area of 1,800 hectares, the Burren is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, making it a significant ecological site. It is often referred to as "fertile rock" due to its rich biodiversity and distinctive geological features. Local experts in the area's geology provide valuable insights that help us understand the importance of this remarkable landscape.
Connemara & Kylemore Abbey Gardens. Kylemore Abbey is home to the largest walled garden in Ireland. We'll spend time with the head gardener and learn about this fascinating area. We'll also explore the town of Cong with the Cong Abbey and some of the local private gardens.
Exploring County Mayo beyond Connemara and Joyce Country, all the way up to Sligo, reveals a rugged coastline with stunning views and a variety of unique gardens, including both traditional and wild gardens. This region features gardens that are situated close to the Atlantic Ocean, thriving despite the sometimes harsh environment. We will visit Lissadell House, along with a few hidden gardens along the Sligo route.
Donegal is another rough and unforgiving place to garden, but we will be exploring some of the best the West has to offer. We will explore the private gardens of the area and explore Slieve League.
We will end our tour back in Dublin for flights home.
