About this trip

 Ghana invites you!

Located on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, this West African nation, the first sub-Saharan African country to achieve independence in 1957 from its colonial occupier, is known for its rich history that extends back some 12,000 years. With an extensive rich cultural heritage, the country takes its name from the Ghana Empire (c. 4th – 13th century), a great medieval trading empire that was based in the modern-day southeast of Mauritania and western Mali.

Ghana is known for its lush forests, diverse animal life, and miles of sandy beaches along a picturesque coast. Direct sea trade with Europe, established in the 15th century, had much impact on the area’s inhabitants, many of whom actively traded with the Portuguese, Dutch, British, and other Europeans. Forts and castles, many of which have survived, can be found along the Ghanaian coast today. These forts and castles were constructed by Europeans to protect their trade interests—mainly human beings destined for a life of servitude in the Americas. Although trading was originally centered on the gold that was readily available in the area (and from which the future British colony, Gold Coast would take its name), the focus shifted to the lucrative slave trade in the 17th century.
