After breakfast at our hotel, we set off for our tour of Accra.  You will visit historical sites and learn about the historical beginnings of Ghana as an independent country. Gain insight into Ghana’s visionary leaders and relate their goals with the current impacts of the country’s most influential leaders.  

We will visit the W. E. B. DuBois and the Pan African Center which serve as a memorial place and  research center.  At the center we will visit the African American Association of Ghana office and join other returnees to participate in some of the yearlong activities earmarked for "Beyond the Return”

We explore James Town next, which is lone of the oldest settlements in Ghana. James Town which is a fishing community with a lot of vibrant tourist activities notably - the recent Street Festival “Chale Wote” with a lot of fascinating street art.

During our Accra tour we will also visit Independence Square and view the enclosed flame of African liberation, which was lit by Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president in 1961. We continue the short distance to the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, final resting place of Ghana’s founder. Set in attractive gardens, there is an adjoining museum, which contains photos, artifacts and an insight into this incredible man’s life. Adjoining the park is the National Cultural Center, which is Ghana’s largest outdoor arts and crafts market selling traditional crafts from all over West Africa.  Enjoy Kente weaving workshop to learn about history behind Kente and try our hands at looming.

The remainder of the evening is for leisure.

Holidays in Ghana are a big deal! Start your morning with a early swim or am yoga session. Today is the day to enjoy local art, fashion, music and big vibes.

The festival is designed to elevate and highlight the thrilling and thriving millennial talent in Africa by introducing an interactive event that teaches, explains and explores various cultures through a pioneering approach. Afrochellans will experience art and creative activations from the continent, celebrate African music, and taste premium and cultured cuisine.

Evening at your leisure.  Festivals usually run until the wee hours of the evening.

Today spend the day hanging poolside and enjoying your time with fellow travelers and local socialites. This afternoon we will experience learning how to cook traditional African cuisine in a cooking class.

Today begins our Sankofa Journey. Today we will visit the Elmina Castle/Slave Dungeon built by the Portuguese in 1482 which is the oldest European building in Sub Saharan Africa. This Dungeon is steeped in history and played a prominent part during the tragic transatlantic enslaved African trade era.

This is a emotionally heavy journey. This Dungeon held enslaved Africans in waiting of slave ships to transport them to the New World. We will walk through the Male and Female dungeons and the infamous “Door of No Return”.

As the New Year begins and the old one ends, we'd love to celebrate the last day of the year with an amazing NYE Dinner.

Get some rest and re-energize from the NYE experience. Today is SUNDAY, which is the biggest beach day in Ghana. Today we will be spending our time at one of the beautiful beaches in Accra for a epic beach party. Enjoy live artist, good music, food, drinks, horseback riding and more. Don't forget to pick up some souvenirs to commemorate your trip and soak in the Africa sun.

Today we head to our host Ghanaian village. Here we will pay our respects to Village Chiefs and Queen Mothers. By tradition, we will start by pouring of libation, and the Right to Return: Atonement & Rituals Ceremony to officially restore you to the Cultural and spiritual connections that were denied and stripped from us  during the transatlantic slave trade. The highlights at the village is our Sankofa ceremony which includes traditional naming rites ceremony and families’ integration. The entire village will come and welcome you home with a lot a ceremony full of traditional drumming and dancing. We will also present our adopt village with our donation. This evening is our Farewell event,

About our Social Impact Project - Mission: Clean Water

Green Book is dedicated to making an impact in the communities that we visit. Not only do we do this by tourism & creating true cultural connection -most importantly, we serve.

One of the greatest causes of poverty in Africa is also the most overlooked- WATER.  While many people in the developed world take clean drinking water for granted. In Ghana, close to 6 million people (nearly 22 percent) rely on surface water to meet their daily water needs, leaving them vulnerable to water-related illness, disease and DEATH. 67 percent of Ghanaians lack access to quality sanitation or are entirely without toilet facilities. 

Without water-you can't survive!

At Green Book Travel, we understand how clean and accessible water is often a insurmountable obstacle and a very serious crisis. We are humbly grateful to build a water borehole which will bring water to our adopted village. Globally, 1 in 9 people have no access to clean water. In the communities we partnered to serve, it's 9 out of 9. 

With your help, we can deliver this life-saving gift to where it’s needed most.

Our mission is to reach our fundraising goal by November so that we can start drilling during our visit. It's amazing how a relatively small donation can make such a dramatic difference in so many lives. For an average donation of $45 per person we can reach our goal!
