From May 22nd to 27th, join us for "Granada: Tears Of Joy"—a journey through one of the most biologically and culturally diverse provinces in Europe. This is not a sightseeing trip; it is a plunge into the deep south.
Are you up for it?
Discover Granada's hidden gems with Primitivo Travel.
"Legend has it that, after almost eight centuries in the Iberian Peninsula, the last Nasrid sultan of Al-Andalus wept as he left Granada."
History remembers this moment as the "Sigh of the Moor." Looking back at his lost kingdom from a mountain pass, Boabdil was overcome with emotion. Once you have experienced the magic of this region, you will understand why. To leave this land is to leave a piece of your heart behind.
As ATTA members, we do not watch the world from a bus window. We touch the land. We will explore Granada on foot, by bike, on horseback, and even from the air. We move through the landscape to understand and connect to it.
A Land of Radical Contrasts: Granada is a continent in miniature. In one week, we will traverse the spectrum of the earth:
The Silence of the Badlands: We will cross inhospitable deserts, a landscape of silence and red clay that feels more like Mars than Spain.
The Roof of the Peninsula: We horse ride in Sierra Nevada, breathing the thin, pure air of the highest mountains of Spain.
The White Villages: We will travel through the Alpujarras, where white villages cling to the precipices, preserving a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.
Explore Granada. The great Spanish poet Antonio Machado said of Granada: “All cities have their charm; Granada has its own and that of all the others.”
We will admire, stroll around, and even touch the stones of three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including beautiful views of the Alhambra with the imposing Sierra Nevada in the background. And we will surely understand why Boabdil wept when he left this paradise.
But the true essence of Primitivo is the people and the hidden gems:
Sleep in the Earth: Forget standard hotels. We will sleep in cave hotels, embracing the troglodyte tradition with modern comfort.
The Last Cowboy: We will sit down with the last cowboy of the Sierra Nevada, listening to stories of a vanishing world.
The Clearest Skies: We will turn our eyes upward, enjoying world-class astronomy under one of the clearest starlight reserves in Europe.
The Flavor of the South: We will devour the region—from the "tapas" culture that brings strangers together to the raw emotion of Flamenco in its birthplace.
This is Granada. It is beauty that hurts, history that breathes, and an adventure that stays with you.

The Shift South.
¡Bienvenidos! The adventure begins as we leave the Pyrenees behind. We board our private van in Vielha, descending towards Zaragoza to catch the AVE (High-Speed Train).
The Transition.
As we glide across the spine of Spain at 300 km/h towards Malaga, the landscape outside the window transforms—from the lush north to the arid, golden plains of the center. This is your moment to reset.
For some, it’s the perfect mobile office to fire off those first Elevate follow-ups.
For others, it’s a chance to head to the train bar, glass in hand, to let the conversation flow or simply get lost in the hypnotic scenery of the Spanish interior.
TRANFERS TIMES:
Vielha - Zaragoza: 3h 10 min by Van
Zaragoza - Málaga: 4h 57 min by Train
Málaga - Guadix: 2h 36 min by Van
Into the Badlands.
Upon landing in Malaga, the air feels different—warm, salty, Andalusian. We return to the van for the final leg, heading inland towards Guadix. The greenery fades, replaced by a dramatic, lunar landscape of red clay and eroded gullies. We are entering the "Badlands" of Granada.
Living in the Rock.
This is not a hotel check-in; it is a return to the earth. Tonight, we sleep as the locals have for centuries: inside the mountain. We will stay in a "Cave Hotel", a complex of whitewashed caverns carved directly into the clay. Inside, the temperature is naturally constant, and the silence is absolute.
Forget the conference halls and the city noise. Tonight, you sleep in the quiet embrace of the earth itself.
Floating Over Mars.
"There are other worlds, but they are in this one." Today, we prove this truth. We wake before the world to experience the Granada Geopark from the only vantage point that does it justice: the sky. We will drift in a hot air balloon over the "Spanish Cappadocia." From above, the silence is profound, broken only by the burner's blast. Below, the earth is a spectacular amalgam of tortured shapes and impossible colors—ochres, reds, and whites carved by millions of years of erosion. It doesn't look like Spain; it looks like a painting of Mars.
Grounding in Tradition.
After a leisurely brunch to celebrate our return to earth, we journey to Almagruz. This is a place where the prehistoric heart of Spain still beats. We will explore "Centro de Interpretación Hábitat Troglodita", a settlement deeply rooted in the ancient troglodyte tradition, walking through homes carved directly into the hills. It is a masterclass in human adaptation—a way of life that has remained unchanged, cool, and quiet for generations.
Walking the Edge.
Following a traditional lunch in Purullena, we set out on foot. We will walk the trail to the "End-of-the-World" viewpoints (Fin del Mundo). The name is no exaggeration—the vistas of the Alhama river valley and the jagged peaks of the Sierra Nevada are staggering. It is a serene route that invites reflection, leading us slowly into the hamlet of Paulenca. Distance: 13 km / Elevation gain: 272m
The Spirit of the Almazara.
The day concludes where the soul of Andalusia resides: in the olive grove. We will visit an ancestral olive mill -Almazara-, where the original machinery still hums, pressing the "liquid gold" that defines our Mediterranean spirit. We will learn the secrets of the process before indulging in a private tasting. Our final act is a traditional dinner served within the stone walls of the mill itself.
Waking with the Earth.
We wake embraced by the absolute silence of our cave, a stillness that only the earth can provide. After a breakfast of local bread and olive oil, we make the short transfer to Guadix, one of the oldest and most layered cities in eastern Andalusia.
A City in Layers.
Guadix is not a place you simply visit; it is a city you decode. Built in strata—Roman foundations, Islamic echoes, and Christian grandeur—each era has left a thumbprint on its streets. We will explore this historical labyrinth on a guided, interpretive e-bike route. The e-bikes allow us to glide fluidly across time and terrain, maintaining a relaxed, immersive pace as we navigate the secret corners and sweeping viewpoints of this red-stone jewel.
Deep Time in the Badlands.
In the afternoon, we leave the city behind and travel into deep time. We head toward the Megalithic Park of Gorafe, the starting point for a journey through the most dramatic landscapes of the Granada Geopark. This is a near-lunar terrain where the earth tells a story millions of years in the making.
Whether you choose to hike between jagged gullies and ancient dolmens or navigate the desert tracks by mountain bike, you will feel the scale of geological evolution beneath your boots—or tires.
The Sidereal Climax.
As night falls and the desert air cools, our experience reaches its climax at the Los Coloraos Astronomical Complex. Under one of the most pristine, star-filled skies in Europe, we embark on a “sidereal journey.” Guided by expert astronomers, we leave the planet behind to explore the infinite universe.
The Shadow of the Fortress.
We begin the day at the feet of a giant. We stop at La Calahorra, a stark Renaissance castle that stands like a lone guardian at the base of the Sierra Nevada. Its red-stone walls hide a secret: a refined Italian marble interior, a clash of styles that mirrors the complex history of Granada. From here, the road climbs.
The Breath of the Sierra.
As we traverse the high passes, the air changes—it becomes crisp, thin, and scented with snow and pine. The badlands are a memory now. Below us, the southern slopes begin to reveal the Alpujarras: whitewashed villages scattered like pearls across the green mountainside. These are the last remnants of a Moorish past, where flat roofs and flower-filled courtyards tell stories of a people who mastered the art of mountain living.
Riding with a Legend.
In the heart of the "Authentic Alpujarra," we reach Laroles. Here, we meet Toño, the last cowboy of the Sierra Nevada. Toño is a man who measures time by the seasons and the movement of his cattle. We will mount our horses and follow him through ravines, ancient trails, and hidden paths connecting the picturesque hamlets of Picena and Laroles. This is not a tourist trail; this is a journey through the workplace of a man whose lifestyle is slowly vanishing. We will stop for a mountain picnic—surrounded by silence, the sound of hooves, and the overwhelming majesty of the peaks.
The Soul of the Mountain.
After a spectacularly scenic drive along the sun-drenched southern slopes, we arrive in Capileira. Perched on the edge of the staggering Poqueira Gorge, Capileira is arguably the most beautiful village in the region. As the sun begins to set, casting long shadows over the gorge, you are free to wander the cobbled streets. Capileira is yours to discover tonight. Whether you seek a quiet tavern for local jamón or a terrace with a view that steals your breath, this village is the perfect place to close a day that journeyed into the very soul of the mountains.
A Meditative Descent.
We begin our final morning with a slow, unhurried descent through the Poqueira Gorge, the very soul of the Alpujarra. We walk the ancient path connecting the "Trilogy of White Villages": Capileira, Bubión, and Pampaneira. This is a journey through a living museum of terraces, ancient irrigation channels (acequias), and hidden fountains. We take our time to feel the rhythm of these mountain gems—stopping to watch an artisan at a loom or simply leaning against a whitewashed wall to breathe in the scent of woodsmoke and mountain herbs.
The Emotional Heart.
Once we reach Pampaneira, we gather our tribe to leave the peaks behind. Our path leads us toward Granada, the final destination and the emotional heart of this land. We arrive and begin a relaxed walking tour, moving from the vibrant bustle of the modern city into the quiet, labyrinthine history of the Albaicín. This is the oldest neighborhood in the city, a living reminder of its Islamic past. As we ascend the narrow, jasmine-scented lanes, the city noise fades, replaced by the echoes of Al-Andalus.
The King’s Sigh.
Our journey reaches its climax at the Mirador de San Nicolás. As the sun begins to set, the Alhambra across the valley begins to glow with an almost supernatural crimson light, backed by the white peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Here, we pause in silence. This is the spot where the legend of the "Tears for Granada" was born—where the last Nasrid king, Boabdil, wept as he looked back at the paradise he was leaving behind. To see this view is to understand why.
The Farewell in the Rock.
As evening falls, we head to the hillside of Sacromonte, a neighborhood of caves and deep-rooted traditions. Tonight, we celebrate our journey with a farewell dinner inside a candlelit cave. This is the birthplace of the most authentic Flamenco. In this intimate, raw setting, we will experience a performance that is not a show, but a visceral expression of the Andalusian soul—powerful, intimate, and haunting.
Some of you may want to stay in Granada. Others may want to visit Málaga or Seville. And those who wish to can return to Madrid with us.
After a final breakfast in the south, we begin our comfortable journey back to the capital in a private van, tracing the path from the Andalusian mountains to the vast Spanish plateau.
Baeza: A Renaissance Interlude
We’ll break the journey in Baeza, a UNESCO World Heritage site that feels frozen in the 16th century. Unlike the rugged earth of Gorafe, Baeza is all golden sandstone, quiet plazas, and Italian-influenced architecture. We’ll stop for a traditional lunch here—expect some of the world’s finest olive oil to be the star of the table.
The Plains of Castilla-La Mancha
Post-lunch, the scenery shifts into the iconic landscapes of La Mancha. This is the land of Don Quixote: a sweeping horizon of vineyards, windmills, and endless red earth stretching toward the horizon. It’s a meditative drive that highlights the sheer scale of the Spanish interior.
Arrival in Madrid
Our journey concludes with a drop-off at Chamartín Station. Whether you’re catching a high-speed train to your next destination or heading into the city for one last tapas crawl, you’ll arrive refreshed and right in the center of the action.
