About this trip

This trail is one of the most beautiful and spectacular rail trails in the entire country -- you can read all about it here. Upon its completion in 2013, the GAP was the first path inducted into the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy’s Rail-Trail Hall of Fame. We bike 150 miles from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Cumberland, Maryland, following the gentle grade of the former rail line. Our route allows us to bicycle directly to each of our overnight stays, where we have all the hotel, B&B and restaurant reservations made for you. At the end of the trail we van back from Cumberland to our opening hotel in Pittsburgh.

On this trip we will take a tour - also reserved well in advance - of Frank Lloyd Wright's masterpiece, Fallingwater. This is included in the tour price.

As we ride on the trail, leaving Pittsburgh, we pass remnants of giant steel mills. As the miles go by we slowly leave behind the industrialized areas and enter quiet woodlands and deep forests. We travel through tunnels, over bridges and viaducts, including the Salisbury Viaduct 1908 feet long, through the Savage Tunnel, 3,294 feet long on an easy hard packed stone dust surface. The final day is a treat with the last 22 miles down hill to Cumberland. This is a very scenic and fun tour!

What about E-bikes?

Senior Cycling does NOT have E-bikes available for rent, but we have a well established relationship with Bike the 'Burgh which will get you a discounted rate on a weekly rental for the tour. They are located just a few blocks from the Hampton Inn Pittsburgh downtown, so you can walk over and pick up your bike upon your arrival.  Of course, you are welcome to bring your own Class 1 (Pedal-assist only) E-bike on this tour.

Difficulty rating of this tour:

Intermediate. On a scale of 1-5, with 5 being most difficult, this tour is rated a 3. This tour’s trail is hard packed crushed stone. It is quite smooth and suitable for all bicycles. Larger tires will help to provide more stability, however.

What a beautiful area! The riding was wonderful, except for the day it was cold and raining. But the tour leaders came through and picked us up as soon as they could. Jack and Maer are great! There are so many extracurricular activities in the area it was hard to see them all. I will definitely consider this trip again in the future as there is so much to see and do. It is easy to understand why this is one of the top ten rail trails in the country. It is outstanding!

Everything was lovely, with comfortable and clean accommodations and knowledgeable and friendly guides. Food was good, ranging from local pizza to gourmet meals at delightful restaurants. While the weather wasn't cooperative (rained 3 out of 5 days), the Great Allegheny Passage trail was still stunningly beautiful. I would definitely ride the GAP again, and plan on checking out other Senior Cycling bike tours!

First time on a multi-day tour and didn’t know what to expect but loved it! Ned and Russ were great, making sure everyone had a great time regardless of equipment, skill or fitness level. Everyone rode at their own pace. Beautiful scenery accompanied by the nearly constant sound of waterfalls or rapids. All the logistical details were taken care of. Totally stress free.

We were a little wary heading into this trip since we had little experience biking long distances. Ned the tour operator and owner of Senior Cycling happened to be on this tour with us. He assured us that we would be fine and that we could travel at our own pace. We averaged 30 miles a day on a mostly flat and level trail. Yes, we were exhausted at the end of the day but well worth it. The trail was amazing winding along the river and mountains. My wife and I set our own pace and had the trail to ourselves for hours on end. The feeling of solitude and peacefulness on the trail gave us a sense of gratitude. Grateful that we were healthy enough to do this trip and to have this experience. ( I am 64 and my wife is 62 and we are both in reasonable shape even though my wife had a heart attack almost 2 years ago). This is a trip we will reflect back on and remember forever. As for the Senior Cycling company, they run a first class operation worth every penny. From the expertise of Ned and our guide Russ to the accommodations, snacks and meals provided. I would highly recommend you book a trip with them NOW while you still can. Life is short so pick a trip from their site and book today. I am sure we will be riding with Ned and Company again.
