The Machame route; well known as the “Whiskey Route” begin in the south of the mountain.
It is the most-travelled route on Kilimanjaro taking more than 40% of the climbers. The trail is generally challenging but on the positive side, it has beautiful scenery and the trail follows ‘trek high – sleep low trend’ and thus, higher summit success rate as compared to Marangu route!
The Machame route can be done in a minimum of 6 days and physical fitness is required for some short scrambling stretches and for then ascent of the Baranco wall! An extra acclimatization day is recommended at Karanga Valley for newbies to provide more rest before heading to the Base Camp ready to face the final challenge!
7 Days Machame Route Climbing start for driving you from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate it takes about 45 minutes. After paper work the journey start passing through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain.
We depart the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. At lower elevations the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. We continue a short distance until we reach the Machame Camp.
