About this trip

Escape Medellin for the day and enjoy the waters of Guatapé and the great rock of El Penol. This day tour starts with a pick up at 7am from Medellin. At our pre-determined locations. We will head off on our journey taking in beautiful landscapes until we reach our first destination.

This Multi activity day trip will take us to explore the famous rock of El Penol. Once here we will give a bit of history about the place and one of its most famous guests! Afterwards you will be given the chance to climb the 649 steps or the 740 steps to the top of the extended tower. Once at the top you can take in a magnificent view of the dam and its shores. After we will visit the replica village where again you will be given a bit of history. Here you can see what it once looked like and where the original is now sub-merged. Now a cross is visible from the waters of the original site.

We will then move down to the waters edge. Put in our canoes and head off to go explore a few locations. Including a walk around the old finca El Manuela of the infamous Pablo Escobar! From here we will paddle off into the town of Guatapé. Where we will finish our paddle and stretch our legs before going to grab a spot of lunch.

This package includes all entrance fees to the park and transport from Medellin.

Itinerary

Days Outline
Exploring Guatape

We will first arrive at the base of El Penol and here we will go climb up El Penol and the 649 steps or continue up the tower for the 740 steps. Here you will have a fantastic 360 degree view of the surrounding area and see how grand the dam actually is.

Afterwards we will visit the replica village of the now sunken village of Penol that was flooded in 1978. From here we can look across the reservoir and see a cross which marks the original location.

From here we will head down to the waters edge where we will put the canoes onto the water and paddle off in the direction of the cross rising above the water. This marks the area of the original village that was sunken in the 70’s. Then we shall move off to the famous finca of La Manuela named after Escobar’s daughter. We will go take a walk around this piece of history. Like or hate this is a piece of history that defined Colombia.

Once we have finished our walk around the finca we will get back on our canoes and paddle to Guatapé where we will disembark. Founded on 4th October 1811, by the Spaniard Don Francisco Giraldo y Jimenez. It was declared a municipality in September 1867. Since then it has undergone transformations to make it the Municipal it is today. Each building has tiles along the facade's lower walls in bright colors and varied images. Many of the tiles are tied to the products sold by the shops, or the beliefs of the residents. Others are cultural images of the farming heritage of the community.

We noticed that travellers were very familiar with such possibilities of a city break to Medellin or Bogota or stay in the coffee triangle, but the incredible opportunities for canoeing the rivers and lakes and the options for fishing in some magnificent and remote locations, or to explore some of the breathtaking scenery on horse back or by foot were comparatively little-known or thought as too dangerous or difficult. We came back with a plan to share some of these incredible journeys and now we offer tours to some of these places and with time we shall offer even more places to be amazed by. We are well versed in our fields with over 3 decades of canoeing and outdoor pursuits experience in remote and hard to reach areas and led many expeditions within the British military and student groups. We strive to impress and leave you in total amazement and to make you want to return again and again. As an English speaking company we offer tours in English so you do not have to speak Spanish
