Dr. Camila Alire, past president of ALA, invites you to join her in Guatemala for a journey beyond compare.
Engage in meaningful interaction and collaboration with librarians, academics, government, and community leaders focused on improving literacy and access to library services in urban and rural settings. Develop an appreciation of Guatemala’s response to education challenges through a mutual exchange with representatives from non-profit leaders, professors and and people of the community. Hosts may include local speakers as well as visit to facilities like the Biblioteca Nacional de Guatemala, Fundacion Rieken Guatemala in Jocotenango who will provide an overview of the library system in Guatemala, and a local university like the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala.
Learn about the importance of global support, collaboration and the role of non-profits who are eager to provide opportunities for learning to all Guatemalans, including the indigenous Mayan communities which represents 45% of Guatemala's population.
This journey is especially unique as we have partnered with a social enterprise, Ninos de Guatemala, who invest all their profits in the education of almost 600 children in Guatemala. Your participation directly supports their mission, and you will have an opportunity to see firsthand the amazing work they are doing.
Cultural highlights on this unique journey include: exploring the colonial town of Antigua, visit to Iximche, one of the world’s finest examples of pre-Columbian Mayan civilization, coffee and chocolate workshop, school visits, Guatemalan cooking class and a journey to Lake Atitlan, once described as “the closest thing to Eden on Earth” by Lonely Planet. Explore the Mayan communities around the lake, learn about their cultural heritage and join them as they go about their everyday lives.
Non-library professionals are warmly welcomed on this journey and will enjoy privately guided cultural activities while the delegates are in meetings.
