About this trip

** Scroll down to view the complete day-by-day itinerary**

Join us on this off-the-beaten-path trip in Guatemala, as we travel throughout the northwestern region of the country with visits to Chichicastenango, Quetzaltenango, and the main event: Huehuetenango. This trip provides the opportunity to explore some of the less visited regions in Guatemala where the majority of the population self-identifies as indigenous. This culturally and linguistically diverse region of the country has also been heavily affected by climate change, immigration, and the lasting effects of the country's 36-year-long internal conflict. In addition to its cultural, historical, and social intrigue, Guatemala's northwestern region is also incredibly beautiful. Throughout this trip, we will have various opportunities to disconnect and enjoy nature including visits to rivers, lakes, cenotes, mountain ranges, and light hikes.

Our trip begins with a fun cooking class in Antigua Guatemala for your welcome dinner and some general information about the trip. The next morning we depart for Chichicastenango to visit one of the largest indigenous markets in Latin America and to enjoy a multi-course lunch with our friends at Proyecto Tux. This dining experience is put together by a group of indigenous women who are passionate about sustainable and seasonal food production as well as preserving pre-hispanic recipes and customs related to food.

From there we will continue to Quetzaltenango where we will relax in some natural hot springs and visit the first church ever built in Central America along with other surrounding towns in the Quetzaltenango and Totonicapán departments. On the last portion of our trip, we will head to Huehuetenango, an area that does not receive a high volume of tourism. Here we will see dry cenotes that are over 500 ft, deep, wet cenotes where we will be able to take a swim, and a turquoise lake that will take your breath away! We will also visit the interesting town of Todos Santos Cuchumatán where we will stay at a small, family-owned bed and breakfast.

Remember, we will be getting fairly off the beaten path during our time in Quetzaltenango, and even more so in Huehuetenango. Some of these areas are not developed as tourist sites to the same degree as La Antigua or Lake Atitlán so they prepared for a few bumpy rides and more modest accommodations at times. Rest assured we've done everything possible to make the trip as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, and above all else to keep you safe and healthy.

Itinerary

Day One
¡Bienvenidxs a Guatemala!

Upon arriving at the airport, one of your Program Directors will be waiting to greet you and accompany you to the beautiful colonial town of La Antigua via private shuttle (approx. 1 - 1.5 hour drive). Once in La Antigua, you will be checked into your hotel and given a brief orientation of the city. If you need any assistance going to the bank, store, pharmacy, etc. one of the Program Directors will be more than happy to accompany you. In the event, you arrive early in the morning and would like to coordinate any specific activities during the day just let us know so we can accommodate your requests.

This evening we will enjoy a traditional Guatemalan meal and learn how to make tortillas during this interactive dining experience at our friend Joaquín’s cooking school just outside of La Antigua. Here we will dine on the terrace while you will meet the guides and fellow travelers to discuss the upcoming activities for our adventure here in Guatemala.

The Heart of Travel was born out of a deep-rooted love and passion for travel, art, history, food, nature, culture and adventure as well as a call to give back to the communities and people that had already provided us with so much. The travel industry has long been bombarded with double decker tour busses, beach front resorts and cruise ships, often at the expense of the local communities. As a response to this failing system, we began a boutique travel company that allows clients to explore new places in an authentic and non-touristy way, offering travelers a more intimate and unique experience all while removing the stress and hassle of researching, planning, bargain hunting, reserving and more that goes along with planning a trip or vacation.

Such a great trip with great trip leaders, guides and fellow travelers. Lots of fun and varied activities with plenty of time for self exploration. I would highly recommend the trip for those looking to experience the many charms of Spain. - and the food!

I’ve just returned home from 17 days on Heart of Travel’s first fabulous trip to Spain. We visited Barcelona, Granada, Malaga, Seville, and Madrid— not to mention side trips to the smaller towns of Ronda and Cordoba. Chelsea and Pam amazed me daily! Their ability to research artsy boutique hotels, small family owned businesses for us to experience, along with their attention to detail and ability to respond to glitches was impressive. I loved going into two homes for cooking classes with delightful women. Our guided tour through Sagrada Familia was a highlight as was spending time in Parque Guell in a Barcelona. I thoroughly enjoyed our kayak outing and would have liked to have done a city bike tour for a bit of variety and exercise too! We saw amazing citadels, mosques, cathedrals, and a bullring. Thank you ladies for organizing a wonderful tour and helping to create a “family” of fellow travelers.

We booked heart of travel services with only a limited amount of time before our actual trip took place. This is my second time using their services and as always they go above and beyond. Chelsea's communication and organizational skills always amaze me. Selvyn, who was my tour guide once again is extremely knowledgeable, kind and funny. My friends and I had such an amazing time! It was their first trip to Guatemala and they already stated we will all be going back and using Heart of Travel services to explore other areas of beautiful Guatemala. I highly recommend anyone who is considering booking a tour to do so. They offer an experience that allows you to really get to feel and know the people of the country you are visiting and as an avid traveler not many companies do this. I love Heart of Travel and the amazing work they do in the communities they serve and am looking forward to utilizing their services not only in Guatemala but in other parts of the world.

This was an amazing trip. The accommodations were great, comfortable and varied. We enjoyed the hotels as much as we enjoyed the change of pace and the stay at the Air B & B near Seville.. It was definitely comprehensive and we got to experience many regions of Spain and the pace felt just right. There was always the option of opting out and having some time to explore on our own which was welcomed. We not only visited the museums and Cathedrals that each city had to offer, in addition, there were also opportunities to vacation and go to the beach, kayak and go sailing/boating. We enjoyed the food as well as the opportunity to learn how to make Paella, Sangria and delicious Moorish sweet treats. Rather than piling on and off of a designated bus we used a variety of transportation methods including the metro in Barcelona, small buses/vans, hired cars and a flight from Barcelona to Granada. If I could go to Spain again in the future I would do it again with Heart of Travel. The leaders, Chelsea and Pam, were there for us 100 per cent, and took care of all the details. They were creative problem solvers, warm and have good travel skills. It was a pleasure to experience Spain with them.

It was a very pleasant trip, with a well balanced combination of activities. There was the Sunday bike ride on closed-to-car-traffic Reforma Blvd, visits to neighborhoods and coffee shops (including as a site for one of our many Spanish lessons!), visits to the main parks, several museums (Frida Kahlo, Palacio des Bellas Artes, and the Anthropology Museum), artisanal markets, the historic district, Xochimilco, Teotihuacan, Ballet Folklorico. To name a few of our outings! There were also quite a number of absolutely fabulous restaurants (lunch or dinner). Dominique prepared an excellent Spanish workbook directly related to our activities which was very helpful and explored new vocabulary and expressions for an intermediate level of students. Our local guide Daniel was extremely knowledgeable and Dominique and Eimy (both with Heart of Travel) were both very attentive to the needs of the group. The fact that Dominique has lived in Mexico City was also helpful. We did a lot of activities - but not too many! The pace was good. There was adequate solo time. I would definitely go on another trip with Heart of Travel!
