      About this trip

If you love to hike and always dreamed of "bagging" a 14-er (a mountain higher than 14,000 feet elevation), NextTribe will take you to the summit.

We'll hike at lower levels in Breckenridge, Colorado, as we acclimate. Then with experienced women hikers as our guides, we will climb Quandry Peak on the last full day of our stay. Quandry Peak is known as one of the easiest of the Colorado 14-ers and we'll go at a reasonable pace to help you make it to the top.

NextTribe members receive $100 off this trip. Learn more about becoming a member here.

To get your questions answered about this trip, join our Zoom info session on Tuesday, April 25th at 7 pm ET, 6 CT, 5 MT, 4 PT. Sign up for the info session here.

Quandry Peak and Hiking in the Rockies

Fourteener season generally starts in late June to early July depending on how much snow fell over the winter and how dry the trails are. All Colorado 14ers can have patches of snow year round, but the trails generally are clear to hike by mid-summer.

Located just south of Breckenridge, Quandary Peak is the only 14er in Summit County with many different routes to the 14,265-foot summit. Adventurers looking for their first ascent can try the East ridge route, which is a long gradual trail that slowly but surely ascends to the peak. It has incredible views of the dramatic 14ers to the South and the Ten Mile and Gore ranges to the North.

What Gear do I Need for a 14-er

      • Good hiking shoes or boots – your feet will thank you.
      • Rain Jacket – Mountain weather conditions change quickly; be prepared.
      • Layers – Regardless of what the temperature at the trailhead is, it will be much colder and windier on top.
      • Avoid wearing cotton– As cool as you might think you look in your jeans and t-shirt, cotton clothing is a bad idea. Once you sweat (or it rains) your cotton clothes will stay wet, leaving  you cold and uncomfortable. Polyester and moisture-wicking fabrics are best. We recommend a dry-fit t-shirt, a warm fleece pull over and a waterproof rain jacket, along with zip off hiking pants. Wool socks, a warm hat and gloves are also a good idea.
      • Hiking poles are highly encouraged
      • Hat
      • Sunscreen
      • Water bottles

What I Need to Know about Acclimation

Breckenridge is at 9,700 feet, so by spending a few days in town you will be helping yourself acclimate to the altitude you will be dealing with on the hike.

If you are coming from low altitude, please plan on making an intermediate stay at an altitude of between 5,000 and 8,000 feet for at least a couple of days beforehand. NextTribe is hosting a Wellness Retreat in Evergreen, Colorado (elevation 7,165 feet) from Friday Aug. 4th to Wed. Aug. 9th, which would be a perfect way to ease into the higher elevations, plus a very fun and enlightening respite.

You will be responsible for making your own decisions about how much time you need in the mountains before the NextTribe trip actually begins. We have scheduled two days of hiking before we go onto the 14-er trail, because we aren't sure where people are coming from. Some of you may be coming from the mountains and already be ready. But please do not rush your acclimation period.

Our Hotel: The Lodge at Breckenridge

We'll be staying three nights in the beautiful Lodge at Breckenridge, which overlooks the well-known mountain town.

The hotel has a shuttle into town that we can use to go exploring or shopping or into dinner in the evening. Parking and breakfast is included.

      Travel Insurance

We strongly encourage every traveler to purchase travel insurance within 21 days of booking your trip. Several people have had to cancel recent trips because of a death in the family, an injury or COVID, and once we enter the non-refundable stage of your booking, we can NOT refund your trip for any reason.

NextTribe is working with a travel company to make buying insurance easier. Until then, we suggest you consult this article for your best options.
