 Georgetown, capital city and chief port of Guyana, was renowned for its wooden 19th century architecture. Today, Georgetown’s skyline is fast changing as the city transforms into a 21st century metropolis. However, some of the more iconic examples of the architecture of that period remain including Austin House, St George’s Cathedral, City Hall and the Supreme Court.

Edgar Austin Mittelholzer was a Guyanese novelist, the earliest novelist from the West Indian region to establish himself in Europe and gain a significant European readership. 

This tour of New Amsterdam, Berbice, highlights the town's rich colonial history and its connection to the renowned Guyanese writer.

Key sites include the Canje River Bridge, Berbice High School, and Coburg Street, where Mittelholzer spent his childhood. The New Amsterdam Town Hall and Ebenezer Lutheran Church, where Mittelholzer’ s grandfather served as the first Guyanese Lutheran priest, reflect the town's enduring historical and cultural significance. The tour also emphasizes Mittelholzer’ s literary legacy, influenced by his environment and his interest in cinema, with a visit to the historic Government House, now known as State House.

 

Enjoy a full day river tour along the Essequibo River starting at Parika stopping at the historic Fort Island and view the remains of Fort Zeelandia, a Dutch Fort built in the 18th century. From newly renovated historic Kingston Sewall and the new building surrounding it, to the 1823 Demerara Uprising monument, this uniquely Guyanese Trail will stop at several of the vendors along the way, allowing you to enjoy the variety of foods and beverages offered to the public seven days a week. 

Amidst the constant sea breeze, families and couples, cars and chatter, The Georgetown Seawall, for many, is what makes Guyana so special.

Atta Rainforest Lodge sits in an opening in the Iwokrama Rainforest and offers a complete immersion in the rainforest experience. Lovely gardens attract over 12 species of hummingbirds and lawns lead to the forest verge, where Black Curassow, deer, monkeys, Red-rumped Agouti and sometimes tapir come to feed. 

An easy 15-minute walk along a forest trail leads to the Iwokrama Canopy Walkway, a series of suspension bridges and decks of up to 30 metres in height and 154 metres in length. This allows close up views of the mid and upper canopy of the forest and allows wildlife to be relatively free from human intrusion. This is an excellent platform for birdwatching or simply enjoying the unique opportunity to be in the tree-tops.
