This was a fabulous trip with an opportunity to explore the charms of both large and small towns in both Switzerland and France..Our tour guide Pascal was excellent and made sure we did and saw everything ,while still affording us plenty of free time to explore on our own,. . Our hotels were right in the city center and were perfect for being in the midst of all of the attractions and beauty of the cities. We really enjoyed the food and the authentic restaurants that were part of the included dinners. I loved the family owned winery that we visited where we had a great lunch and wine tasting. The grand finale in Paris was the perfect ending to a wonderful trip.

Discoveries of Switzerland and France (October 2-12, 2022) was an interesting and beautiful trip with many delightful surprises which greatly enhanced our experiences. Our arrival transfer in Zurich was excellent and our amazing tour captain, Pascal, saw to it that our driver was still there even when the flight was 3 hours late. (We had notified him prior to leaving the United States). Basel - the Hotel Marthof was in a central location and it was easy to walk to all the major points of interest. Our room was a lovely size and comfortable overall; however, the two steps up from the entryway, closet and bathroom made it hazardous at night. We realized after two days that one of our sensor lights for the steps was not working and my companion fell down the steps in the early morning. Very fortunately, she was not injured although we were both very shaken by the incident. We spoke to the very kind lady at reception who moved our room immediately to one without steps (I believe it was an accessible room). I would recommend that rooms with step-ups not be used in the future. I know that I would not wish to stay in that type of room again. All the appointments in the room were comfortable and there was plenty of closet space. The bathroom was excellent. Breakfast at the hotel was excellent and the staff were cordial and efficient. We had one orientation walk with our TC which was enjoyable - we even walked down and up! 5 flights of stairs to the edge of the Rhine river which was really an exciting experience. We had a delightful welcome reception at a cafe with pastries and beverages. The welcome dinner was in a lovely hotel; however, I didn't feel that it was representative of Swiss cuisine. Our transfer between Basel and Strasbourg was by train and was excellent in every way - from the vehicles which took us to the station to the first class train tickets and the Swiss chocolates surprises from Pascal onboard. Our luggage was transferred separately so we did not have to handle anything other than a purse or small bag. In Strasbourg, we were met at the station and transferred to our hotel. The Maison Rouge, an Autograph hotel, is very well- located near the historic center. Our rooms were not ready on arrival which was to be expected. However, the eventual check-in did not go too smoothly and several of us changed rooms to those that were more acceptable. I have to say that the front-desk manager worked very hard to satisfy all of us and eventually, I was pleased with the accommodation. The hotel even arranged for complimentary beverages and canapes in the lounge one evening as an apology. The breakfast was very good, the room was spacious and comfortable, the staff were eager to please, the buffet was ample and I liked that there was an included breakfast menu so that eggs, omelets, pancakes, waffles etc could be ordered. The city tour of Strasbourg was comprehensive and we all loved the panoramic boat ride. Initially, I was disappointed that our city guide did not arrange the times so that we could see the noon-time ringing of the astronomical clock which was to be part of our tour. However, once Pascal realized that, he advised that he would see to it that we got to see it on our free day in Strasbourg and our admission tickets were paid by the company. Pascal also saw to it that we got to have a fondue experience which was planned on our itinerary. We had two days of exploration of the charming towns of Alsace and they were two interesting and beautiful days. We had two comfortable vans for transportation. We visited two towns each day and had walking tours with our tour captain and some free time. Each day we also had an included delicious and traditional lunch experience and both were great. One was in a family winery( which was wonderful and prepared by the family) and one in a canal side Alsatian restaurant. The food was excellent quality and so interesting. I really enjoyed the pace of those days and the fact that the days were full of activity. Our transfer to Paris - again, transfer to the train was excellent. The fact that we had to handle our luggage on the train would have been impossible had it not been for the fact that Pascal was able to get the luggage on the train for us. The train was very comfortable and we had excellent first class seats. On our arrival in Paris, there was concern about transfers to our hotels due to the taxi strike. However, we transferred fairly quickly and without much difficulty. Our group was divided between two hotels in Paris. They were located only a few blocks apart but it made for a disjointed feeling in the group and we all missed being able to gather informally at breakfast. That was a negative for our Paris stay. It wasn't that there was a different hotel quality - they were both 5 star hotels. We found that we were making activity plans hurriedly at dinner. It must also have been challenging for our tour captain, but I have to say that he did an amazing job making sure that all of us were taken care of in every way. I stayed at the Hotel d'Aubusson and it was excellent in every way. Regarding our stay in Paris, although several of us have been there multiple times, it did not work well not to have a group tour of some type planned for at least one day. One free day to visit museums independently is fine, but it is difficult for even the most savvy traveler to be at loose ends in such a large city. At the beginning of the week, you always have to consider what is open and closed - especially on a Monday. But there needs to be more directed activity including transportation. Our farewell activity, early evening Seine cruise and dinner at the foot of the Eiffel Tower were fabulous! The one hour cruise was so interesting and delightful with wonderful views of Paris from the river. The location of our restaurant at the foot of the Eiffel Tower was fantastic! To watch the Eiffel Tower light up and then sparkle was spectacular and worth the whole trip. The food wasn't very good at all, but we really weren't focused on the food. We just wanted to watch the sparkle. But for the future, adjusting the dining might be something to consider. Overall, it was a fascinating experience especially for those travelers who have visited France in the past.
