About this trip
Discover Tunisia's 3 most visited sites in one day. 3 UNESCO World Heritage sites: Carthage the empire, the white and blue village of Sidi Bou Said, and the magic of the Orient in the Medina.
- Start at the Archaeological Park of Carthage
Why Start Here: It opens early and is the largest site. The morning light is beautiful and temperatures are cooler.
Focus on Highlights: You cannot see everything. Prioritize:
The Antonine Baths: The monumental Roman seaside baths. Their scale is breathtaking.
- Depart for Sidi Bou Said
A mere 10-minute drive from the Carthage sites.
- Sidi Bou Said, The Blue & White Paradise
Stroll & Immerse: Walk up the main cobbled street, Rue Habib Thameur. Soak in the iconic blue doors, white walls, and bougainvillea.
Must-Do: Enjoy a traditional mint tea with pine nuts at the famous Café des Nattes (downstairs) or Café Sidi Chabaane (upstairs, with the iconic cliffside view).
Shopping: Pick up souvenirs here (better prices than in the Medina for some items). Look for ceramics, perfumes, or embroidered linens.
Lunch: Grab a quick but delicious meal. Consider a Tunisian sandwich ("cassecroûte") like a fricassé or a malawi, or a simple plate of makrouna (pasta).
- Depart for the Medina of Tunis
Drive to Bab El Bhar (The Sea Gate), the historic entrance to the Medina. (~30-45 minute drive with traffic).
- The Medina of Tunis (UNESCO World Heritage)
Enter through Bab El Bhar: This marks the start of the main artery, Rue Jamaa Ez-Zitouna.
Focus on the Core:
The Souks: Get lost in the specialized alleys: the Perfumers' Souk (Souk El Attarine), the Shisha Souk (Souk El Trouk), the Chechia (felt hat) Souk (Souk Ech-Chaouachia).
Cultural Break: Find a hidden café within the Medina for a fresh juice or coffee.
