Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai is an island in the Central Pacific, part of the Hawaiian archipelago. It's nicknamed "the Garden Isle" thanks to the tropical rainforest covering much of its surface. The dramatic cliffs and pinnacles of its Na Pali Coast have served as a backdrop for major Hollywood films, while 10-mile-long Waimea Canyon and the Nounou Trails traversing the Sleeping Giant mountain ridge are hiking destinations.  Its' dramatic mountains roll down their lush greenery until it meets the crashing waves below, and the waters off its beaches hide corals and colorful, exotic fish. The island exudes a romantic sense of mystery.

Relaxing and pristine Kauai (the Garden Island) is the least commercially developed of the Hawaiian islands. Waterfalls, scenic drives and more than 60 beaches dot the landscape. Some beaches have great snorkeling, others offer friendly tidal pools and some are perfect for all kinds of water sports. Dry-land activities include hiking the Kalalau Trail on the Na Pali coastline, taking a day trip to Waimea Canyon and experiencing life on a sugar plantation at Grove Farm Homestead Museum.

Kauai has a relaxed, rural vibe. No single road circles the entire island, and resort areas are thoughtfully designed. In fact, the law limits any new building from being taller than a coconut palm tree. This has given Kauai a certain small-town charm that has earned it a reputation for being laid-back. It is the perfect place to forget your phone, take in the scenery, and reconnect with your travel companions.

Kauai is the only place in Hawaii where you can navigate rivers by kayaking, canoeing, or boat riding. The Wailua River, the largest on the island, is also the most popular for these activities. The other rivers are the Hanalei and Huleia.

With some 50 miles of beaches, Kauai is the perfect place to enjoy some of Hawaii’s marine life. Lydgate Beach Park and Poipu Beach Park are two of the most popular snorkeling spots. Depending on the season, you might also see Hawaiian monk seals, green sea turtles, and humpback whales. Visitors are expected to respect all wildlife.

Kauai grows the largest quantity of kalo (taro) in the state, helping to preserve Hawaiian heritage. Some traditions say that this sacred plant was the stillborn older brother of the first Hawaiian, and thus a relative to all Native Hawaiians. Kalo is used to make poi, a staple of the Hawaiian diet that you can enjoy at any Kauai luau.

Mary Susan Stults

Southern Utah native Mary Susan Stults has been practicing Yoga for over 25 years since she was a child and young teen, surfing for 19 years, and paddling for over 7 years now. Born in Fort Payne, Alabama, Mary Susan was raised in Cedar City, a town in Southwest Utah about an hour from Zion National Park. An avid nature lover, Mary Susan grew up exploring the many hiking trails, rivers, rocks, mountains, canyons, and the endless outdoor beauty of Utah and Colorado with her friends and family. Despite growing up landlocked Mary grew up a deep love and appreciation for the ocean and water and that passion has only grown with each passing year.

An absolute people person, Mary has taught Yoga for adults, all-ages, family, adaptive, tweens, teens, kids, and tots for over 9 years, and is a certified 500+ E=RYT Yoga & Meditation teacher, a WPA/Paddle Into Fitness Certified Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) and SUP Yoga teacher, certified Kids Yoga teacher, certified Adaptive Yoga teacher, Trauma Informed Yoga Teacher, Restorative Yoga, and is known by all for her enthusiasm and positive outlook. She is a current Manduka Ambassador, Glide Stand Up Paddle Athlete & SUP Yogi, and Athlete for Local Honey Designs.

Mary Susan teaches a knowledgeable, dynamic, sustainable, and compassionate, alignment-based practice that weaves and blends together the traditions of Ashtanga and Iyengar. Many describe her energy as contagious, finding her nurturing and patient style of teaching to be welcoming and supportive.

She infuses her Yoga, Meditation, SUP, and SUP Yoga classes, workshops, and global retreats with her grounded yet light-hearted nature. For Mary Susan, being a student of the practice of Yoga is as important, if not more important than being a teacher; she embraces and celebrates that a great teacher is a student first, and a teacher second. When she is not working and teaching herself you can often find her in a teacher training or Yoga intensive with her forever teacher and mentor, Maty Ezraty with whom she has completed over 800+ hours of formal training, and well over +2000 hours in total.

She hopes to help others delve into what it means to live well physically, mentally, and spiritually, by exploring and developing their own yoga practice, and translating the joy, strength, confidence, mindfulness, balance, and grace that we find on the mat, into our lives off the mat!

More About Kauai:

Known as the "Garden Isle," Kauai has more to offer than its endless expanse of white-sand beaches, sparkling blue waters and lush rainforests. It is also home to some of the most interesting sacred sites in the Hawaiian Islands.

Hikinaakala Heiau

Hikinaakala HeiauBuilt around 1300 AD, Hikinaakala means "rising of the sun." This temple was used as a place to welcome the sunrise with prayers and chants. The Hikinaakala Heiau is located near another ancient site named Hauola, which was a pu'uhonua (place of refuge) in ancient Hawaii.

Maniniholo Dry Cave

This cave on Kauai's north shore is named after Maniniholo, the legendary head fisherman of the menehune, a mischievous race of small people, or dwarfs, who lived hidden in the forests and valleys of the islands before the first settlers arrived from Polynesia. The cave is the site of an ancient Hawaiian legend.

Menehune Fishpond

The Menehune Fishpond was supposedly built by the legendary little people of Hawaii, the menehune, in just one night. It is estimated to be around 1,000 years old. The fishpond is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Pohaku Ho'ohanau

Large boulders mark this important historical site. Pohaku Ho'ohanau is a birthing ground of the ali'i (Hawaiian kings or chiefs). Royal women would travel here to give birth, assuring their children of high rank.

Poli'ahu Heiau

Located with the Wailua River State Park, the Poli'ahu Heiau is believed to be a luakini heiau, a sacrificial temple. Its stone walls make for an impressive sight.

This trip was so great!! I had the pleasure of attending this trip in the past and couldn't wait to attend again. things have only gotten better since I last went. All of the accommodations were great, close to shops and events, and the activities are well thought out and things I would not have thought of myself. The paddle along the cliff sides is breathtaking, and the VIP experience at Cova d'en Xoroi is a once in a lifetime experience. i wouldn't hesitate to attend more Trips with Mary Susan.

Thank you, Mary for the experience of a lifetime! Mary was very prepared for any and all circumstances during our many adventures, most of which I can personally say gave me the assurance and comfort to have the best day ever on our excursions. Mary provided all dietary accommodations offered at each food venue, gave valuable insights on local customs and celebrations, personally vetted and obtained trusting relationships with all activity guides, prioritized safety protocols, and prepared a backup plan for all the weather interruptions on the trip. More importantly, at each major point in the trip she was conscious of each person’s needs for well being and rest. I personally could not have had a successful boating excursion without her peppermint oil and her guidance on how to position oneself on the boat. I also appreciated when, after seeing our state of being after a full day, she offered a lovely and deeply thoughtful meditation instead of her personalized yoga class (which I can attest gives invaluable insight into improving foundational yoga poses). I want to note that her yoga practice is not strictly abiding, and she values the allowance and space to move in a way that suits each body and mind. With no stone unturned, she offered a wide array of accessible yoga and meditation resources after the trip with thoughtful detail via email, and shared amazing photos that we could all view on all devices. Everyday offered something new and exciting, as she allowed space on the itinerary to offer some fun evening activities based on special events. We were in awe of Barcelona and Menorca for its beauty and its people. I’m grateful for Mary’s nurturing and knowledgeable approach to all her activities, as well as the friendships formed with each lovely woman on the trip. If you want countless opportunities for something your soul can smile about, I would go on one of her adventures.
