      About this trip

**Scroll down for the complete day by day itinerary**

This trip, hosted in collaboration with Nate Perlow of Nate Meets World, is designed for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who are looking for a truly off-the-beaten-path experience. During your time in Guatemala, you will hike various volcanoes and even do a three-day trek from Quetzaltenango to Lake Atitlán!

While this tour centers on hiking and outdoor activities, we've made sure to fuse in some cultural immersion and educational activities along with some time to grab a beer at one of Antigua's premium breweries or relax in natural hot springs.

This trip is for people who are physically ready for multiple days of hiking, including, numerous volcanoes with steep inclines set at high altitudes. At times our lodging and meals situation will be on the more basic side as we will be in more remote and rural parts of Guatemala. In addition to hiking, this trip is also designed to give you a deeper understanding of Guatemalan history and culture and to support small local businesses!

Heart of Travel and our co-host, Nate, look forward to seeing you all soon!

      DAY ONE
      Welcome to Guatemala!

      FEB 19th, SATURDAY: D included

Participants will be flying in from a variety of different places therefore travelers are welcome to choose the flight path that best suits their travel preferences and needs. That being said, we encourage participants to book flights that arrive in Guatemala in the morning or early afternoon so that they have time to get settled before the welcome dinner that evening. If you need assistance booking your international airfare please let us know!

Upon arriving at the airport one of the Program Directors will be waiting to escort you to the beautiful colonial town of La Antigua via private shuttle (approximately a 45-minute drive, without traffic). Once in La Antigua, you will be checked into your hotel and be given a brief orientation of the city. If you need any assistance such as going to the bank, store, or pharmacy, your Program Directors will be more than happy to accompany you.

This day you will enjoy a traditional Guatemalan meal and learn how to make tortillas during an interactive dining experience at our friend Joaquín’s cooking school just outside of La Antigua. We will dine on the beautiful rooftop terrace as we meet the guides and fellow travelers and discuss the upcoming activities for our adventure here in Guatemala.

The Heart of Travel was born out of a deep-rooted love and passion for travel, art, history, food, nature, culture and adventure as well as a call to give back to the communities and people that had already provided us with so much. The travel industry has long been bombarded with double decker tour busses, beach front resorts and cruise ships, often at the expense of the local communities. As a response to this failing system, we began a boutique travel company that allows clients to explore new places in an authentic and non-touristy way, offering travelers a more intimate and unique experience all while removing the stress and hassle of researching, planning, bargain hunting, reserving and more that goes along with planning a trip or vacation.

Traveling with small kids, we like the flexibility of exploring the world at our own pace, where we want and when we want. That is exactly the niche that Heart of Travel is catering for. We made some last minute changes to out itinerary to see and experience more without wasting extra time in transit. HoT made it happen with no fuss nor hassle. In the end we spent a thrilling day in Chichicastenango market town with lunch prepared according to centuries old revived Mayan recipes and another day hiking Volcán Pacaya. Our tour guides were knowledgeable, chatty, friendly, accommodating, helpful and so on. Kids were happy and excited meaning we got a lot of bang for the buck.

Fantastic trip getting to meet real people in each of the towns. The coffee tour with Don Jose was the highlight of my trip.

Our guide Gustavo was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, punctual, and patient. We traveled to 4 provinces during this trip, covering both the mountain and rainforest regions. It was a great mix of learning language, culture, architecture, history, cuisine, nature, adventure, and meeting and learning from both the locals and fellow travelers along the way. Highly recommend!

I just completed the Oaxaca 2022 Did de Muertos Trip with Heart of Travel and it was amazing. Such a surreal and gratifying experience. Learned so much in regards to the culture and celebrations and customs of the local people and enjoyed learning about their traditions. Heart of Travel made this entire experience so enjoyable and well rounded with cultural immersion experiences. Great accommodation choices and knowledgeable local guides. Their use of local guides to share their knowledge and love for their traditions and home is a great learning experience. I have partake in several of their trips and would highly recommend not only this trip but any they have to offer. They defintiley take care of you. Would travel with them again!!

I’ve just returned home from 17 days on Heart of Travel’s first fabulous trip to Spain. We visited Barcelona, Granada, Malaga, Seville, and Madrid— not to mention side trips to the smaller towns of Ronda and Cordoba. Chelsea and Pam amazed me daily! Their ability to research artsy boutique hotels, small family owned businesses for us to experience, along with their attention to detail and ability to respond to glitches was impressive. I loved going into two homes for cooking classes with delightful women. Our guided tour through Sagrada Familia was a highlight as was spending time in Parque Guell in a Barcelona. I thoroughly enjoyed our kayak outing and would have liked to have done a city bike tour for a bit of variety and exercise too! We saw amazing citadels, mosques, cathedrals, and a bullring. Thank you ladies for organizing a wonderful tour and helping to create a “family” of fellow travelers.
