About this trip

Step back in time aboard the historic Colonial Crafts for an unforgettable autumn getaway through America’s storied past. Running across a premier weekend schedule with departures on both Saturday and Sunday, your route departs from our nation's capital, Washington, D.C., and weaves south past rolling Virginia countryside, peaceful river basins, and iconic Mid-Atlantic landmarks. Destination stops in both Newport News and Williamsburg place you right in the heart of Virginia's historic Tidewater region. As you travel, you will enjoy sweeping scenery from our observation lounge while being pampered with historic luxury and personal, white-jacket care provided by our dedicated on-board steward, porter, and chef.

Upon arriving in Newport News and Williamsburg, you will step directly into living history and coastal Virginia charm. Explore Newport News to discover coastal rail heritage along the James River waterfront, world-class maritime exhibits at the Mariners' Museum and Park, and the historic tree-lined neighborhood of Hilton Village. Just up the road in Williamsburg, 18th-century cobblestone streets, costumed interpreters, fife-and-drum corps, and historic artisan shops bring America's colonial origins to life. Stroll through the 301-acre Historic Area of Colonial Williamsburg, shop in Merchants Square, or venture out to nearby historical treasures like the Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown battlefields.

Your journey is entirely all-inclusive, featuring freshly prepared, custom dining inspired by the rich culinary heritage of Virginia and the colonial South. While menus are curated seasonally, guests aboard past trips have enjoyed delightful morning offerings such as warm honey butter biscuits or hearty cornmeal pancakes. For lunch and dinner, potential selections might include regional specialties like genuine Virginia ham biscuits, rich Brunswick stew served with warm cornbread, slow-roasted pork with sweet potatoes, blackened flounder, or classic turkey pot pie. Desserts and beverages often showcase traditional favorites like cheese pie, gingerbread cake, blackberry cobbler, colonial-style spiced cider, and fresh mint lemonade.

Your ticket price includes all of your meals, along with hors d'oeuvres, snacks, and beverages. Overnight trip segments include your own private bedroom and bathroom. Enjoy historic luxury with personal care by our on-board servers. Passengers who purchase tickets involving an overnight segment will be assigned one of our four private rooms. Each room features an upper and lower berth and an attached private bathroom with a toilet and sink. Our on-board staff makes up each room for daytime travel with comfortable chairs, then folds them away to turn down the bunks while you are at dinner. Whether you are traveling alone or with a friend, you must purchase two tickets to reserve a private room. An all-stainless steel shower room is available at the end of the hallway for use at any time. Your ticket also grants you access to the Amtrak VIP lounge in Washington D.C. to ensure your journey is comfortable from start to finish.

About your organizer

We operate a historic railcar that's available for use throughout the United States. We offer scheduled and chartered vintage railway travel experiences. The Colonial Crafts was built in 1949 for the Pennsylvania Railroad. It has four bedrooms, each with a private bathroom. There is a shower at the end of the hall, a small kitchen, and a very large lounge area that comfortably seats 20 people during daytime travel. Your journey includes all meals and beverages served by our professional staff including a Porter, Steward, and Chef. The Pullman Company assigned this car to Elvis Presley in 1960 after he returned from military service overseas. He used the car to travel from New Jersey to Graceland, and then on to Los Angeles where he completed filming his movie, “G. I. Blues”.
