Hold my spot! Have you traveled with Rowan Tree Travel & Fibercraft before and trust us to provide a great experience? Are you so excited to visit Amsterdam that you are willing to reserve a spot without seeing the full itinerary? A Registration Form and a non-refundable $50 booking fee are all that are required to reserve your spot on the trip before it officially opens and is released for general registration in February 2025.
Ready for an adventure? Join us on a winter romp through the Netherlands! We will spend most of the trip exploring the city and its surroundings from our hip neighborhood in Amsterdam. We’ll begin with all the delights Amsterdam itself has to offer from Stroopwafels to lager, canal hopping and cozy yarn shop hopping. A visit to Stephen and Penelope to pick up kits and time in the shop with the man himself to consult on color choices will of course be top on our list! But we will also have a personalized tour of the remarkable Rijksmuseum with a focus on the importance of the wool trade through the ages in Holland. We will also have a kit with a pattern designed by our fiber ambassador extraordinaire, Louis Boria of Brooklyn Boy Knits highlighting other local yarn gems sourced from Dutch sheep.
In an effort to be responsible visitors, we will venture further afield as the Dutch do - by train! In Haarlem and Alkmaar, we’ll visit more exquisite yarn shops, participate in a hands-on dyeing workshop, and marvel at Dutch engineering feats, including a visit to a historic pump station. We'll also enjoy windmill sightings, savor the flavors of Gouda, and immerse ourselves in the festive atmosphere of charming Christmas markets, as we’re visiting in December.
Our tour culminates on the picturesque West Frisian Island of Texel, renowned for its Texel sheep. Here, we'll visit a local sheep farm, engage in a felting workshop using their wool, and explore the fascinating textiles salvaged from shipwrecks in the Wadden Sea. Weather permitting, we may even have the chance to harvest oysters from the sea, all while enjoying the comfort of our beautiful hotel on the island.

Sydney is a knitter, spinner, crocheter, dyer, and felter. She loves to explore how different local cultures work with fiber. At one time Sydney managed Quail Hill Farm including sheep for fiber and meat as well as pigs, goats, horses, donkeys, too many cats and dogs, plus various types of poultry. She took her sheep wool from shearing to dying, using her own dye plants, to spinning to knitted garments. Sydney grew up in NYC and Switzerland and is fluent in French, Italian, and German. She worked for many years as a French teacher and mentor in Waldorf Schools. Before that she worked as a financier on Wall Street and she now uses those skills for strategic planning at Rowan Tree.
