With local guide Jacqueline Granda, join local Quiteños as they visit seven iconic churches on the afternoon of Holy Thursday. The route follows La Calle de Siete Cruces, a street that joins the pre-Incan Temple of the Sun (the Panecillo) with the Temple of the Moon (barrio San Juan). Many of these churches will be open for afternoon visitations where locals as well as tourists take photos in remembrance of the day.
This iconic event leads naturally into a very special Candlelight Procession that passes through the heart of Quito's UNESCO-recognized Historic Center. Led by a Prioste who carries a banner in recognition of Holy Thursday, the procession also includes the cast of the famous Jacchigua Folkloric Ballet. Each and every one of the characters provide a great sample of syncretism and include Verónicas, cucuruchus, and matracas.
In addition, devout citizens accompany the procession, holding candles of their own. Jacquie will offer you the opportunity to observe the procession or to participate by walking alongside local residents.
The event ends with a final stroll through the narrow streets of La Ronda to end at the Iglesia de Santo Domingo, representing the arrival at the Holy Sepulchre, the tomb where Jesus was laid to rest after his death upon the cross.
By accompanying Jacquie on this active day, you will maximize your opportunity to see and experience events while not having to worry about schedules and time.
