In Crete, the kazani is far more than the copper still where tsikoudia is made. It is the gathering that forms around it: food arriving at the table, music beginning, glasses being filled, stories being exchanged and people coming together around a tradition that returns every autumn.

The Homecoming Journeys Kazani Weekend is built around that gathering. Over four days, each experience draws you deeper into the Crete that gives the kazani its meaning: village hospitality, wine, mountain shepherd traditions, food, music, craftsmanship and the pleasure of sharing a table. Everything leads toward Saturday’s private kazani celebration.

Arrive in Crete by air or ferry and begin your weekend with a private transfer to Archanes, one of the island’s most atmospheric traditional villages and the home base for the journey.

There will be time to settle in, explore the village and ease into a slower Cretan rhythm before the group gathers for the first experience of the weekend.

As evening falls, we will meet at Moinoterra Winery in Archanes for a private tasting of six Cretan wines accompanied by local charcuterie and other small bites. It is the first moment of the weekend together: a chance to meet your fellow travelers, learn about the land and raise the first glass.

The evening continues at Kritamon, where a generous shared dinner introduces the group to the flavors of ancient and contemporary Crete through a progression of dishes built around local ingredients, traditional preparations and contemporary touches. Wine, water, raki, sweets and fruit complete the table.

From the very beginning, the weekend is meant to feel less like checking into a tour and more like being received into a place.

Friday takes you several hours away from the coast and into the rugged interior of Crete, traveling to Zoniana and the foothills of Psiloritis. This landscape has shaped the island’s shepherds, musicians, rebels and storytellers for generations.

At To Spiti tou Voskou, a hand-built shepherd’s mitato high in the mountains, you will step into a world shaped by the flock, the seasons and traditions passed from one generation to the next.

The October experience brings us into the milking and cheesemaking season, with the opportunity to see sheep being milked and take part in traditional cheesemaking, including the techniques behind cheeses such as graviera, mizithra and anthotyro.

Then the fire becomes the center of the gathering. Antikristo lamb and a full Cretan meal are prepared in the mountain tradition. This is not a staged stop between sightseeing attractions. It is time spent inside a living Cretan tradition.

The journey continues to Anogeia, one of Crete’s most storied mountain villages and a place inseparable from the island’s music, history and the legacy of Nikos Xylouris. We will experience the village through its square, its people and its stories, with time for coffee, galaktoboureko and a deeper encounter with the character of Anogeia.

This is a full day of immersion—food, landscape, music and memory woven together.

*The complete excursion, including meals and drinks in Zoniana, private minibus transportation, guides and story-telling are included in the package. The evening meal upon return is not included as this evening is meant to be a relaxing time and left at your leisure, after a 10 hour excursion.

Saturday begins with your hands in the earth.

During a Minoan-inspired ceramics experience in Archanes, you will create your own piece of pottery and learn to inscribe it using Linear B symbols, connecting a hands-on creative experience with the ancient culture of Bronze Age Crete. Your piece will be fired after the workshop, carefully packaged and sent to you afterward.

Then comes the emotional heart of the weekend: the kazani.

At a traditional family distillery set among the vineyards near Archanes and Knossos, we will gather around the kazani during the autumn raki-making season.

You will learn how raki is made, taste it warm from production, and enjoy the food, raki and other beverages served as part of the celebration — all included in the experience price.

A kazani is a gathering. Food fills the table. Music begins. People dance. Stories are exchanged. Old traditions and new memories occupy the same space.

Our evening will unfold around a generous Cretan feast featuring dishes such as boiled mutton and gamopilafo, accompanied by live Cretan music, traditional dancing and a celebration that carries the energy of the kazani into the night.

When the kazani winds down, the night is not over. We will travel together into Heraklion to Vissino Cafe Bistro for a lively city street party — a change of scene that carries the evening from the traditions of the countryside into the energy of the city. Transportation from the kazani to Heraklion and the late-night return to Archanes are included.

The kazani is a connection to the past, culture and heritage, but above all it is an expression of hospitality—the simple and powerful act of opening a place at the table and sharing what we have.

After a final morning in Archanes, included departure transfers will be coordinated for guests traveling from Heraklion Airport or Heraklion Port.

You will leave with more than photographs: clay shaped by your own hands, the taste of smoke and warm raki, the sound of the lyra, stories from the mountains and memories of tables opened generously to you. More important is the connection created over the weekend—to the people who welcomed us, to the places and traditions we shared, and to the small group that experienced them together.

It is a small, hosted weekend designed to bring you inside a living Cretan tradition rather than simply show it to you.

THE COMPLETE PROGRAMMED WEEKEND

Your €498 package is not admission to a single event—it is the complete programmed weekend. From Thursday arrival through Sunday departure, it includes private transportation across Crete, carefully hosted cultural experiences, every programmed meal and tasting, hands-on activities, live music and celebrations.

PRIVATE TRANSPORTATION

Private arrival and departure transfers are included between Heraklion Airport or Port and Archanes village center. Throughout the weekend, private transportation is provided to and from every event and experience in the itinerary—covering hundreds of kilometers across Crete’s villages, mountain roads and cities. Archanes remains the operating base, while every scheduled route and return is handled for you.

WINE, FOOD AND HOSPITALITY

The package includes a private tasting of six Cretan wines with local accompaniments; Thursday’s welcome dinner with wine, water and traditional closing treats; the full mountain meal featuring antikristo lamb; coffee and traditional sweets in Anogeia; and the complete kazani feast with raki and other beverages.

MOUNTAINS, CULTURE AND HANDS-ON EXPERIENCES

Your full-day private journey into Psiloritis and Anogeia includes the seasonal shepherd experience, hands-on traditional cheesemaking and the cultural encounter in Anogeia. The package also includes the Minoan-inspired pottery workshop with Linear B inscription, plus firing, packaging and delivery of your finished piece, and the private kazani experience at a traditional family distillery.

MUSIC, CELEBRATION AND THE HERAKLION FINALE

Raki and other beverages are served throughout the kazani celebration, accompanied by live Cretan music and traditional dancing. The evening then continues at Vissino Cafe Bistro for the Heraklion city street party, with included transportation back to Archanes.

Everything described above is included in the €498 package. There are no additional charges for the programmed meals, tastings, activities, transportation and experiences.

Archanes offers a wide range of lodging, with rates beginning at approximately €65 per night. Options include single rooms for solo travelers, traditional guesthouses and studios, as well as two- and three-bedroom apartments for families or groups traveling together.

Homecoming Journeys has curated recommended properties at different price points, all within the Archanes village area and walking distance of the center.

Archanes village center is the hub for the weekend. All programmed activities either take place in the village or depart from and return there. Included Thursday arrival transfers and Sunday departure transfers operate between Heraklion Airport or Port and Archanes village center.

This weekend is personally curated and hosted by Greg Pappas as a way to share a Crete rooted in village life, food, music, tradition and hospitality. It is built around the kind of moments that create connection: being welcomed to a table, hearing the story behind a tradition, making something with your own hands and sharing experiences with a small group rather than moving anonymously through a tour. The goal is not simply to visit Crete, but to feel connected to it.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE

Two equal payments of €249 are available. The first payment is due at booking, and the remaining €249 is due October 1, 2026.

Include your full name and “Kazani Weekend 2026” in the payment reference. Once payment is received, we will record it in WeTravel and email your booking confirmation. The same October 1, 2026 balance deadline applies to the second payment. WeTravel does not charge a transaction fee for payments recorded as external payments; any Revolut or currency-conversion charges are the traveler’s responsibility.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

Guests must arrive in Crete on Thursday, October 22, 2026. Included arrival transfers will be coordinated from Heraklion Airport or Heraklion Port to Archanes village center. Included departure transfers will be coordinated from Archanes village center to Heraklion Airport or Heraklion Port on Sunday, October 25, 2026.
