The White wine: Duca Bortini Contese De Sedige : 2018 Duca Bortini Contese De Sedige is a blend of Chardonnay, Nosiola and Pinot Blanc that can appeal to any wine drinker, regardless of their taste preferences. Better than a cold beer on a hot summer day. I've tagged this my "all-day Duca" because of its relatively low alcohol. With a hint of lemon, the sweetness of citrus and green apple on the tongue and great thirst-quenching qualities make this a delicious, everyday wine. Grown in the Valdadige region of Northeast Italy bordering Austria, the region has a predominantly Austrian culture and many German grape varieties, resulting in a lighter style wine.

Suggested Cheese Pairing: Brie, Gouda, Gruyere or St. Andre Triple Crème cheese.

• Name: Duca Bortini Contese De Sedige

• Varietal Class: Dry White

• Varietal Type: Blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, and Nosiola

• Country: Italy

• Region: Trentino-Alto Adige

• Sub-Region: Valdadige

• Quality Designator: DOP o Denominazione di Origine Protetta, or Protected Denomination of Origin. This is the top tier. Products that are assigned the DOP denomination must be produced exclusively in very limited and strictly defined areas. It compares to the DOC denomination in wines.

• Pronunciations:  Pinot Blanc [pee-noh blahnk] o Nosiola [nose-ee-ol]

Alcohol: 11%

• Characteristics of wine:

• Blend: Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, and Nosiola ! The other white grapes in the blend add crispness and soften the Chardonnay body

• Color: ! Intensity: Light ! Hue: Light lemon yellow

• Aroma: ! Character: Light, with the lemon and green apple notes

• Tastes:

§  Texture:  Light

§  Sweetness: Dry

§ Acidity: Medium

§  Body: Light

§  Alcohol: Low to medium

§ Finish: Has excellent thirst-quenching qualities

CHEERS! In Italy: Salute! [Saw-lutay}

• Background on country, producer or area:

• Most Italian Chardonnay is grown in the Alto Adige region in mountainous northern Italy, near the Austrian border. Italian Chardonnays are leaner and crisper than those made in other countries.

• Nosiola (or Groppello bianco) is a white Italian wine grape variety that is grown in the Trentino region north of Lake Garda in the Valle dei Laghi. Here it is used in varietal Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) wines and as a blending component in wines such as Sorni Bianco from Trento.

• Pinot Blanco: Italy’s Pinot Bianco (called Pinot Blanc in France and Weissburgunder in Germany) is arguably the best in the world. Aside from some excellent examples from Germany, nowhere else does the variety reach the level of purity and precision it does in northeastern Italy. A mutation of Pinot Grigio (which is in turn a mutation of Pinot Noir), Pinot Bianco is more floral, steely and mineral-driven than Pinot Grigio, which can be surprisingly fleshy and rich in its resinous, honeyed yellow fruit aromas and flavor.

The Red Wine,   This wine is 2018 Pierre Laforest Cuvee St. Vincent from southern France.

This is one of our most popular and versatile reds. I call it a ‘bridge wine’ because, even though it is unique enough for red wine drinkers, it will get white wine drinkers into reds.. It is a soft red wine composed of Carignan, Grenache and Cinsaut in a blend special enough to receive the title ‘Cuvee’ (special blend). It is very versatile when pairing with food.

Suggested Cheese Pairing: Gruyere, Fontina or Creamy Blue Cheese

• Varietal Class: Carignan, Grenache and Cinsaut

• Varietal Type: Off dry red wine

• Country: France

• Region: Hérault

• Quality Designator: IGP o IGP (Indication Géographique Protégée), is a quality category of French wine, positioned between Vin de France and Appellation d'Origine Protegée (AOP). The category superceded Vin de Pays in 2009. A higher designation then table wine.

• Pronunciations: o Carignan: Car-Een-YON o Grenache: Grey-NOSH o Cinsaut: Cin Suo o Hérault: A-who • Alcohol: 11.5 %

• Characteristics of wine: Blends o Blend: Carignan, Grenache and Cinsault o Color: Light ruby red color o Aroma: Light fruity, dark berries, raisins, sour cherry plus a touch of chocolate

o Tastes:

§ Texture: Smooth

§ Sweetness: Light sweetness

§ Acidity: Medium

§ Tannin: Light § Body: Light to medium

§ Alcohol: Low

§ Finish: Medium

• CHEERS! In France: Santé [sahn-tay]

• Background on country, producer, or area: o Grapes: Cinsaut or Cinsault § Cinsaut or Cinsault (/ˈsænsoʊ/ SAN-soh) is a red wine grape, whose heat tolerance and productivity make it important in Languedoc-Roussillon and the former French colonies of Algeria, Lebanon and Morocco. It is often blended with grapes such as Grenache and Carignan to add softness and bouquet.

o Regions:

§ Hérault is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4th, 1790. It was created from part of the former province of Languedoc.

§ While Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon may be the most respected wine producing regions in southern France, Vin de Pays wines are continually gaining attention by consumers. With the consistent Mediterranean climate (the entire wine producing area lies on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea) and limestone ridden soils, the Vin de Pays de l’Hérault Wine Region has become one of the standout Vin de Pays areas in southern France.

§ This area along with their neighbor the Languedoc has had a sometimes-deserved reputation for its contributions to the European wine lake but is now an exciting region which continues to see a flow of investment in the wine industry.

Reviews

One of the most amazing experiences of my life! Stayed at the Meritage Hotel and was treated like a true VIP. Despite the rainy weather, we experienced the best food and wine Napa and surrounding area had to offer. Some of the many highlights: Wine Maker for a Day at Raymond Vineyards; Cave Tasting at Clos Pegase; and mountain-top tasting at Shannon Vineyards. The wine and food pairings at all wineries were exemplary. And, of course the Napa Wine Train did not disappoint -- the gourmet dinner was perhaps my favorite meal of my trip. Our tour driver, David Marchese, was both informative and entertaining. I can't say enough about this trip. I highly recommend both David Marchese at WIneworldtours.com and Diane Fish of Twin Fish Travel to organize the best wine experience you could possibly imagine. Cheers!!!
