About this trip

 What is Huayna Picchu Mountain?

Huayna Picchu is the tall mountain you see in the most famous photographs of Machu Picchu, the classic postal pictures. To be able to hike this mountain, you need to book the entrance tickets far in advance.

The access point is located in the northern corner of Machu Picchu; it takes about 1 hour to the top and 45 minutes down the same trail. Inside Huayna Picchu mountain, you will find steep and narrow stairs know as “stairs of death.” Also, you will be able to see terraces, temples, orchids and enjoy the amazing views that offer this incredible place.

Ticket Times to enter Huayna Picchu Mountain.

Every day 400 people are hiking to Huayna Picchu Mountain, the entrance tickets will sell out fast, for this reason, you need to book far in advance the Huayna Picchu tickets; there two shifts that you can choose from:

The first shift is from 7:00 am to 8:00 am, where 200 people are allowed per day; this shift is perfect for people that stayed the night before at the city of Aguas Calientes. They take the early buses and climb this mountain before sunrise. Depending on the season, the weather, and the hikers’ physical conditions is almost impossible to arrive at the top before dawn. The climbing takes at least 45 minutes to 1 hour to reach the top and another hour to come down carefully.

The second shift is from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, where also 200 people will be allowed to enter; this shift is perfect for people that they just did the Classic Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, Lares Trek, Inca Jungle trek, Tours by train, or any other trek that leads to Machu Picchu. This is because you need to explore the citadel of Machu Picchu first, then you can climb the mountain. The climbing takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour up, and similar the way down. It’s important to know that the top of Huayna Picchu Mountain closes at 1:00 pm, so you need to start coming down before that time.

How Much is the entrance ticket?

The cost of the Huayna Picchu tickets is 75.USD, this includes Machu Picchu citadel as you can not buy just Huayna Picchu itself. Same in the case of Machu Picchu Mountain, to plan a perfect trip to Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu, you must book the shift that is more convenient for your tour.

Great trip thank you. We saw the numerous interesting Inca sites and an alpaca farm, with a very nice buffet lunch. The day was packed with content. Particular thanks to our guide Katya, whose enthusiasm and knowledge seemed to be boundless. She is proud of her beautiful country and heritage, and rightly so. Thanks again for providing this experience.

The company did an outstanding job getting our group through 4 days of hiking. The breakfast, lunch, and dinners they served were unexpectedly very good and plentiful. Sleeping inside the tents was made comfortable with foam and air mattresses along with sleeping bags and pillows. Unfortunately the government is in charge of the bathroom facilities which were pretty bad, they only had flour toilets and in some cases they were quite dirty, not the fault of the company. A lot of the companies that use the Inka trail don't properly pasteurized the drinking water many hikers get diarrhea so bring anti-diarrhea medicine and consider bringing something that can filter the bacteria our of the drinking water they provide. I think I was the only one in my group who got diarrhea, fortunately I brought medicine with me and I started using my filter once it started. Fortunately it only lasted two days and it wasn't bad. The floors of one bathroom facility was covered in diarrhea by another company's group by the time we got there, that was pretty bad. There was only one cold shower facility available at the end of the third day hiking, however, all the bathrooms at the camping sites have large sinks which you can use to at least wash your hair and face. I packed baby wipes, which worked well at cleaning the rest of me and that I used to when I went #2. We saw so many archeological sites along the 4 days hiking, it was amazing. I would definitely do this hike again but would use filter/straw that removes bacteria from the drinking water they provide. Also it's very important to be in Cusco (or high altitude town) at least 3 days before the hike to get acclimated to the altitude. Taking one aspirin (325 mg) and one ginkgo biloba (120 mg) per day starting one week before you arrive at high altitudes towns like Cusco (11,000 ft above sea level) and throughout your stay will help prevent altitude sickness (headaches, nausea, etc). Bring rain gear and use the plastic poncho they provide. My rain gear didn't work that well but the poncho did.

We had wonderful four days on the Inca Trail. Wilian as tour guide made the experience unforgettable and the food was delicious. A huge thank you to all the helpers in the background (especially the porters) who do everything to make this trip so amazing. I will never forget the great time we had in our group.
