About this trip

Southeastern Arizona is home to many resident species of breeding sparrows and a favored location for migrants to overwinter. We will visit semi-desert grasslands and riparian woodlands to observe the behavior and habitat selection of over 20 species of sparrows, towhees, and longspurs. Daily outings will be followed by classroom presentations on identification, vocalizations, ecology, natural history, and conservation. Potential highlights include Botteri’s, Rufous-winged, Black-chinned, and Baird’s Sparrows and Chestnut-collared and McCown’s Longspurs. Other birds of interest that may be seen include Ferruginous Hawk, Scaled Quail, Bendire’s Thrasher, and Mountain Plover.

This was a great trip! We had so much fun and saw gorgeous birds. The weather was perfect in the mountains, the scenery was beautiful. Jake Thompson - our bird guide - was smart, knowledgeable, indefatigable in his search for birds. He has energy! Our organizer, Katinka, was great. Kind and smart and organized,. The artist - Christina Baal was excellent. She had ALL of us (skeptics that we were ) sitting and drawing Burrowing Owls and painting other birds. It was surprisingly fun. Very good at getting us all engaged. Five stars!
