About this trip

In the Northern part of Ecuador, approximately two and a half hours from Quito, is the city of Ibarra and just above it the local community of San Clemente, our starting point for the tour to Imbabura summit. The slopes of Imbabura are steep and lead first through andean grasslands with views of Cayambe volcano and the caldera of Imbabura. About halfway up the terrains gets rocky and a bit more challenging. From the first summit to the main summit, we have an extended part along the crater rim with some exciting rock scrambing parts. Imbabura is good for an adrenaline push during your acclimatization process.

The hike to the Imbabura summit takes between 4 and 6 hours and onother 2 - 3 hours to get back, it's a challenging way to get your acclimatization on the next level for the higher peaks in Ecuador.

Itinerary

Imbabura Summit
challenging acclimatization hike in the North of Ecuador

DAY 1

Pick up in your accommodation in Quito at approx. 06.00 am, drive towards the North of Ecuador (approx. 2,5 hrs). Our target is the local community of San Clemente where we leave our car. Afterwards we start our hike up to the summit of Imbabura - possibly we do both summits, all depending on time, conditions and how you are feeling! On the way up we enjoy breathtaking views of Cayambe volcano, the caldera of Imbabura and extensive andean grasslands. After completing the hike (approx. 4 - 6 hours hours up and 2 - 3 down), we start our journey back to Quito. We recommend doing this hike as a part of a loop in the North, as the approach by car is long, and so is the hike itself. Further, a stay in San Clemente Community is definitely worthwhile.

Thanks so much to the guides who took so good care of us and brought most of us safe to the summit and back again! It was a tough hike and an amazing experience!

Andean Summit Adventure insists on providing only the best guides even if it means losing immediate profit. The company's high ratings prove this. My experience climbing Chimborazo with guide Jaime was one of the most valuable lessons in my life. He is not only an excellent mountain guide but also a good person. Every moment with him was enjoyable. Don't choose just any guide for a small difference in cost. It can determine whether you reach the summit or not. The experience of climbing Ecuador's highest peaks can bring great insights and a sense of accomplishment. Even choosing a tour company can be a significant decision in your life.

Embarking on a journey to Ecuador's majestic Chimborazo volcano with guide Romel Sandoval was nothing short of extraordinary. From start to finish, Romel's expertise and passion for the region infused every step of the adventure, making it an unforgettable experience. Romel's intimate knowledge of the terrain, coupled with his deep respect for the environment, set the tone for a safe and immersive journey. Throughout the trek, Romel's storytelling brought the landscape to life, weaving tales of Chimborazo's geological significance and its cultural importance to the indigenous communities. I will highly recommend andean summit adventures as your guides.

The accommodations were really nice, I am very glad we opted for the high camp because it made the next day much easier. The views were incredible and the climb was adequately tough. I wish I had talked with my guide more about our previous experience mountain climbing because he seemed to assume that we had lots of experience when we did not. Other than that well worth the hard hike.

Beautiful time in Ecuador climbing Cayambe & Chimborazo! The acclimatization part of the trip climbing other mountains such as Pasochoa and Rumiñahui worked great and made the whole program very interesting. Jamie is a very skilled mountain guide and pleasant person to hang out with. Communication in English was always easy with both Jamie and Elisabeth. I highly recommend Andean Summit Adventure.
