In this time of travel uncertainty, it is important to be able to control your own travel circumstances. Our new and innovative Independent Rowing Experiences are unique and customizable opportunities to travel to row while being compliant with local and federation restrictions. Decide when you want to travel and with whom you travel. Choose the accommodation, transportation and meals of your own choice. We have lots of recommendations. Unlike typical guest rowing, our Independent Rowing Experiences do not require you to fit into a scheduled workout. In Thessaloniki enjoy three or more personalized and individually curated rows, typically of two to three hours. Travel by yourself, travel with your family or travel with a small group of friends.
This is a perfect destination for a centre-based rowing escape. Thessaloniki, the second city after Athens, exudes flair, character and dynamism from the diversity of ethnic groups that have touched this region. It also reputed to be Greece’s culinary and cultural capital. When you are not rowing, there is a multitude of things to enjoy. Take a historical walking tour to explore the layers of civilization. Stroll the broad straight avenues of the centre and explore the winding narrow streets of the Ano Poli. Visit some of the best museums in the country – we especially like the Museum of Byzantine Culture. Drive yourself or book a private tour to some of the nearby historical or natural sites that can be reach in a day or half-day trip. You definitely also want to relax in a café along the water, drinking delicious coffee or an aperitif as the sun goes down.
Three rows are built into this Experience, but it is easy to add extra days if you wish. Each of the included rows is different. Whether you are an experienced coastal rower or not, this is a wonderful chance to learn from a master of the sport. The first row is a session instructed and coached by Nikos Gkountoulas, one of the best coastal rowers in the world. He was a World Champion in the pair with his twin brother, before taking up coastal rowing. Thessaloniki hosted the 2014 World Rowing Coastal Championships, and Nikos continues to generously share his love of coastal rowing, operating Greece’s first exclusively coastal rowing club. On the second day, the boats will be trailered to a nature reserve for some river rowing with amazing views. The last day is back in Thessaloniki harbour, with a chance to apply your new skills plus enjoy a sightseeing tour – the city is spectacular when seen from the water. Add extra days and coaching if you wish!
