About this trip

Nestled between the backbone mountain range of the Western Ghats and the tranquil Arabian Sea, Kerala is ‘the other India’: the traffic, the poverty, the noise: all of these trademarks of ‘typical India’ seem to stop at the border. Lauded as ‘the Garden of Spices’ by the ancients and as one of the ‘Ten paradises of the World’ by the National Geographic, Kerala is home to 10 wildlife sanctuaries, 2 national parks, endless tea plantations and as much lush jungle verdancy as your eyes can absorb.

Only truly open to tourism for the last thirty years, Kerala serves as an escape hatch from the hustle and bustle for many Indian travellers and serves as the ideal backdrop for a motorcycle adventure that combines the perfect rhythm of loping mountain switchback roads, a healthy houseboat sojourn on the state’s idyllic Backwaters and exposure to some of the most beautiful,

tropical national parks in the world.

Our journey starts in the coastal city and Cochin (Kochi) and meanders along the Arabian Sea shoreline to Alleppey for two nights on the water and your first crack at the coconut-infused beauty of Kerala Cuisine. We then head for the mountains to the 4,500 foot hill station of Munnar where we will spend the night at a guest house located in one of the region’s most expansive tea plantations.

From here our expedition takes a turn for the natural as we point our front wheels toward the nature sanctuaries of Anamalai Tiger Reserve and Wayanad. The ride-free days in Anamalai and Wayanad will provide an opportunity to explore the jungle on foot or aboard a 4x4.

With the magic of the southern jungles in our rearview, we make our way back toward Kochi for a final night to recount our experiences, preview the images captured by our media team and savour the finest food that Kerala has to offer.

Days 3 & 4

Days 3 & 4 image

Kochi > Alleppey

The shortest of stints to get your ride legs lands us in the heart of the Backwaters. This is followed by a bike free day at our beautiful resort including a day on the water exploring the 600 miles of canals in this most unique corner of the world.

Day 5

Day 5 image

Alleppey > Munnar

To the bikes! 48 hours of serenity behind us, we head for the highlands. A night at a pristine tea plantation provides ample opportunity to wander these lush green landscapes.

Day 6

Day 6 image

Munnar > Valparai

One of our longest rides crosses us over into the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu to one of the region’s largest wildlife sanctuaries. The undulating ride through jungle hillsides is a constant reminder of exactly where you are. Our day of riding leaves brings us to the hill station of Valparai and our lush plantation resort in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve.

Day 7

Day 7 image

Valparai > Ooty

At almost 7,500 feet in elevation, our sinuous route up to the hill station to Ooty will provide the highest, and potentially coolest, destination of our adventure.

Day 8

Day 8 image

Ooty

A free day surrounded by landscapes of coffee, tea, spice, and flower plantations and Raj-era architecture. Stretch your weary legs with a trek through the beautiful Nilgiri Hills or Avalanche Valley

Day 9

Day 9 image

Ooty > Wayanad

The range of the Nilgiri Hills is the highest in the state of Tamil Nadu and will provide a stunning backdrop as we head through Bandipur Tiger Reserve and the

northernmost stop of our ride, Wayanad.

Day 10

Day 10 image

Wayanad

Considered by Keralans to be the most beautiful part of their state, the varied landscape of the Wayanad region offers dense mountain jungles, spice plantations and forests of bamboo. A bike-free day to explore the beautiful grounds of the our plantation resort or chill by the pool is yours for the taking.

Day 11

Day 11 image

Wayanad > Guruvayur

Our gradual descent from the highlands offers endless views of the pastoral plains as we ride through pepper, cinnamon, cumin and nutmeg plantations. We spend our final night on the road in a historic hotel in the temple town of Guruvayur.

Day 12

Day 12 image

Guruvayur > Kochi

As the landscape transforms once again, plantations are replaced by palm trees and we head back to the coast for the last leg of our expedition back to Kochi.
