After breakfast we leave the knolls of the tropical jungle and progress forward with a rising way, crossing the valley along a precarious rough edge. The course currently turns west onto a stream gorge until we show up at the Shira camping area.

From the Shira Plateau we proceed toward the east up an edge, passing the intersection towards the pinnacle of Kibo. As we proceed, our course changes toward the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark's Tooth" (elev 4650m/15,250ft). Not long after the pinnacle we come to the second intersection which goes to the Arrow Glacier. We presently go on down to the Barranco Camp. In spite of the fact that you end the day around a similar height as when you started, this day is vital for acclimatization and will assist your body with planning for culmination day.

After breakfast, we leave Barranco and forge ahead with a precarious edge up the Barranco Wall (elev 4250m/13,900ft), through the Karanga Valley (elev 4050m/13,250ft) to the intersection which interfaces with the Mweka Trail.
