About this trip

TRAVEL INSIDE REGGAE; An Afro-Jamaican Cultural-Musical Immersion

with Maroghini and Matt Jenson

Description

“Reggae music crawls into your bloodstream like some vampire amoeba from the psychic rapids of Upper Niger consciousness.”* If this music has crawled into your bloodstream with its earth shattering drum and bass riddim, its politically and spiritually driving messages of revolution and liberation, and its power to jettison you directly to a higher state of consciousness, then this cultural-musical immersion trip will satisfy your yearning for an even deeper, visceral understanding of Afro-Jamaican reggae music.

Join Jamaican master percussionist Maroghini and keyboardist/songwriter/educator Matt Jenson as they guide you through the streets of Kingston and the lush countryside of this amazing island injecting you directly into experiences such as attending various concerts in the city with both well known and up an coming artists, witnessing musical demonstrations dissecting the roles of the instruments in various reggae styles with some of the master originators of the music, a trip to the hills to experience the sacred drumming roots of the style, a celebration of Bob Marley’s 74th birthday in a day-long music festival at his home, some R&R time on the beach, and more. This trip is part academic musicological study, part socio-political discussion group, part transcendent drum experience and part jam session / dance party!

Ideally suited for musicians (both professional and non professional) and non-musicians who have a deep affinity for the study of music from the perspective of a musician and humble witness of culture.

We had a great experience. The trip provided a comprehensive history of the transatlantic slave trade, the Ashanti Kingdom and the culture of Ghana. There was something for everyone and fun was also included. Shopping was brisk. Senegal was the perfect wind down to get ready to return to the U.S. The tour guides in both countries were knowledgeable and were very accommodating no matter the request. Thank you Travel to Do Good for exceeding our expectations.

This is the most memorable trip that I have had the opportunity to be apart of. THE PEOPLE, THE FOOD, THE FELLOWSHIP, MOST OF ALL THE HOSPITALITY . AMAZING 👏

This trip was fun, eye opening, educational, and I enjoyed every second of it! The WeTravel team did an excellent job in planning and partnering with KITS to make our groups experience phenomenal. I highly recommend using WeTravel for all trips to the Motherland.

The trip was a wonderful spirit filled experience, true to form with art, music and culture throughout the country. While the trip was a bit too jammed packed with activities, it was good to have a variety of exposures, events and adventures for the full experience. Suggestions for the tour guide; Help set expectations by informing the tour group a day ahead of what to expect. Examples: Inform group of the day(s) when we will be walking in water so we can wear water shoes, short pants, etc. Inform group of days where there will be no running water or toilet facilities while on tour. Thank you again for a well planned and orchestrated "travel to do good" experience.
