The Into Patagonia Experience takes place in Villarrica, Chile and surrounding lakes, nature reserves, and national parks.
Villarrica is the capital of the Zona Lacustre or Lake District and the gateway into northern Patagonia. This area is known for its lakes, waterfalls, volcanoes, and millennial forests, boasting incredible flora and fauna.
Villarrica is also home to the Mapache people, who continue to preserve the traditions, cuisine, and language that has shaped this land for hundreds of years.
In the Mapuche worldview, time is not a straight line but a living cycle—shaped by seasons, and the rhythms of the land. In southern Chile, this sense of time is felt in the unhurried flow of rivers, the slow turning of forests, and a quiet awareness that the past and present exist side by side.
The Into Patagonia Experience is thoughtfully designed for travelers who value depth over pace — those who seek meaningful connection and the quiet luxury of time well spent.
Our emphasis on slow travel and small group sizes offers you a personal connection with your hosts and travel companions and an immersive experience in northern Patagonia’s natural beauty.
We welcome solo travelers, couples, and small groups.
Best enjoyed by guests aged 25 and over (a recommendation rather than a requirement).

Your only plans for the day are to relax and unwind from your flight with a selection of optional activities at Casona La Colina, including a complimentary massage, a stroll in the garden, and a restorative soak in our sauna and wood-fired hot tub.
We’ll end the evening with dinner and a boutique wine tasting led by Rodrigo Moraga, an experienced Chilean winemaker and enologist.
For guests who prefer to learn about the Chilean wine making tradition without without partaking, traditional non-alcoholic Chilean refreshments will also be served.
After a day of rest, it’s time for the soft adventure to begin.
Huerquehue National Park boasts some of Southern Chile’s most stunning flora and fauna — from vibrant birdlife to the iconic Araucaria, Chile’s famous monkey puzzle tree.
This hike is moderate with a combination of gentle walking stretches and some steep inclines, but the stunning views make every step worth it. In total we’ll spend about 4-5 hours in the park and enjoy plenty of snacks and and a picnic lunch at Laguna Toro.
On the way back, we’ll stop for a replenishing dinner in Pucón, the friendly Chilean ski town offering striking volcano views and a lively tourism scene.
We’ll venture to a local orchard, to experience the cider-making process — from orchard to glass, where tastings, stories, and luncheon will unfold to the slow rhythm of southern Chile’s countryside.
Back at Casona La Colina, take some free time and enjoy leisure activities such as a soak in the hot tub or a stroll into town.
As the day softens toward evening, we'll set sail on a scenic lake cruise for an intimate sunset meal, celebrating southern Chilean cuisine paired with select wines or ciders — a vibrant close to a perfectly paced day.
Spend the day in one of Chile’s most iconic natural sanctuaries, where ancient araucaria forests and glacier-fed lagoons lie under the watchful eye of Volcán Llaima.
Some highlights of Conguillío National Park include La Araucaria Madre, a 1,800 year old monkey puzzle tree — Araucaria araucana — and the Trufel-Trufel waterfall.
As evening settles in, we’ll gather for live music featuring traditional Chilean and Argentine ballads, while sharing impressions of Conguillío’s biodiversity over a traditional Chilean asado (grilled barbecue).
After a full day of hiking, there is little better than a soak in thermal spring water.
However, before we spend the afternoon relaxing at Termas Geometricas — some of the most beautifully designed thermal baths in Chile, at the foothills of Volcán Villarrica — we have a special opportunity:
Newen Leufu — “Force of the River” in Mapudungun — is a local cooperative, formed with the purpose of preserving and honoring the heritage of the Mapuche people.
In the morning, the guides of Newen Leufu will not only arrange for us breakfast and lunch prepared in the Mapuche culinary tradition, but will also share with us their history, customs, and worldview — especially the role of the natural word in the Mapuche ecosystem.
We'll spend the day at Huilo Huilo, a privately protected biological reserve in that preserves a rare stretch of Valdivian temperate rainforest — one of the most biodiverse and least common forest ecosystems in the world.
The reserve is known for its lush landscapes of ancient forests, waterfalls, rivers, and glacial lakes, as well as its rich wildlife, including species like the pudú, puma, Darwin’s frog, and the endangered huemul deer.
Activities to chose from at the Huilo Huilo Reserve include nature walks, museum visits, cultural activities, wildlife sighting, kayaking, and horseback riding, which we will coordinate ahead of time according to your preferences.
By now you're quite familiar Volcán Villarrica, its ever-present slopes quietly keeping watch in the backdrop of each activity.
In Mapundungun, Volcán Villarrica is called Rukapillan, which means "the house of the great spirit."
No stay in Villarrica would be complete without making its acquaintance.
To liven our own spirits, we'll start the day the with a coffee tasting at Eco Mapu, a local specialty coffee-shop known for its dedication to the craft and creative incorporation of regional flavors.
In 2025, Eco Mapu was awarded #10 Best Coffee Shop in South America, taking the #2 position in Chile.
Afterwards, we'll journey up the volcano, for an invigorating walk in the national park with spectacular photo-taking opportunities.
We invite you to spend your final day and night with us, unhurried.
Our on-site hot-tub, sauna, and masseuse are ready at your leisure. Our gardens will invite you to reflect on your experiences.
And, your hosts and concierge receptionist will be available all day to help you review and coordinate the next stage of your journey, whether that be a return home or further exploration in Chile's Patagonia.
Remember, as an included gift in the Into Patagonia Experience, you have access to our itinerary planning services, which will be provided by your hosts before your arrival in Chile to make sure that your entire stay in Chile is seamless and spectacular.
As an additional complimentary gift, we’ve arranged a special once-in-a-lifetime experience: a farewell flight with the private pilots at our local airport.
The Villarrica Airport is just 20 minutes from our property, and your approximately 45-minute flight will take you above the crater of Volcán Villarrica.
You’ll depart Chile’s Lake District — the Gateway to Patagonia — with a final look at the region’s lakes, forests, and volcanoes from above.
And, of course, we will gather for our farewell dinner — an opportunity to share stories and say goodbye before you travel onward.
Your hosts are the family that owns and operates the La Colina Estate as well as the founders of Travel Chile Insider Excursions.
As the caretakers of La Colina over the past 12 years, we developed a passion for welcoming travelers into the magnificent nature-scapes of Chile's Lake District.
"Rather than simply providing lodging, we wanted to do something more meaningful.
We regularly found ourselves listening to our guests stories over dinner, helping them disconnect from everyday stressors, and guiding them towards the hidden gems and unique experiences in our area.
Overtime, La Colina Retreats and Travel Chile Insider evolved as a way to create our own signature experiences at the La Colina Estate, inviting travelers to celebrate the culture, cuisine, and natural beauty of Chile's Patagonia."
