  • A waterproof jacket – rain showers are frequent

  • Comfortable walking shoes (waterproof if possible) or hiking boots for cobblestone streets and nature trails

  • A compact umbrella or hooded raincoat for sudden rain showers

  • Scarf, hat, and gloves (especially in Scotland, where it can be windy)

Other Essentials

  • Universal power adapter (Ireland and Scotland both use Type G plugs)

  • Reusable water bottle (tap water is safe to drink)

  • Daypack for excursions and hikes

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses (the sun can be stronger than expected)

  • Binoculars (for spotting wildlife in the Highlands or along the coast)

  • Windy conditions, especially in Scotland – pack accordingly

Money & Payments

Currencies

  • Ireland (Republic of Ireland) uses the Euro (€)

  • Scotland (United Kingdom) uses the British Pound Sterling (£)

Payment Tips

  • Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's a good idea to carry some cash for small towns and rural areas.

  • ATMs are readily available, but be sure to check if your bank charges international withdrawal fees.

  • Tipping is not expected, but rounding up the bill or leaving 5–10% for excellent service is appreciated.

  • Avoid paying in US dollars, as they are not commonly accepted and will result in poor exchange rates.

Taxis & Rideshares

  • Uber is limited in both countries – consider using local taxi apps, such as FreeNow in Ireland, or book taxis in advance in Scotland.

Food & Dining

Must-Try Dishes

  • Ireland: Irish stew, soda bread, boxty, fresh seafood, full Irish breakfast

  • Scotland: Haggis, neeps and tatties, Cullen skink, fresh salmon

Pub Culture

  • Pubs often serve excellent food, but kitchens may close by 9:00 or 10:00 PM.

  • Tipping is not required, but rounding up the bill is appreciated

European Travel Tips

Travel Tips: Money, Safety, and Transportation

Money & Currency Tips

  • Use Local ATMs: Withdraw Euros (€) from reputable bank ATMs for the best exchange rates. Avoid EuroNet ATMs, as they charge excessive fees.

  • Watch Out for High Conversion Rates: Some ATMs may offer currency conversion with rates as high as 11-15%—decline this option and choose to be charged in Euros instead.

  • Use a Currency Converter App: Apps like XE Currency help you track real-time exchange rates.

  • Always Pay in Euros: If a merchant asks whether to process your card in USD or Euros, always choose Euros to avoid additional conversion fees.

  • Carry Small Bills & Coins: Cash is widely used, especially for small purchases like drinks or bathroom access. Keep small denominations handy.

  • Tipping Etiquette: Tipping is not expected, but rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% for good service is appreciated.

  • Use Up Your Coins: Euro coins cannot be exchanged for U.S. dollars, so spend them before you leave.

Financial Safety Tips

  • Stay Aware: Be mindful of your surroundings and avoid displaying large amounts of cash in public.

  • Split Up Cash & Cards: Keep your cash, credit cards, and essential documents in different places—some in a wallet, some in a secure money belt, and some in your luggage.

  • Secure Your Belongings: Keep your wallet close to your body, and never leave your purse or backpack unattended. A cross-body purse with a secure zipper is ideal.

  • Use ATMs Wisely: Withdraw money from well-lit, secure locations, such as inside a bank or a secure ATM facility. Avoid any ATM that appears to be tampered with.

  • Check Statements Regularly: Monitor your bank and credit card transactions to spot any unauthorized charges.

  • Use Credit Cards for Larger Purchases: Credit cards offer better fraud protection than debit cards and often come with travel perks, such as insurance and no foreign transaction fees.

  • Notify Your Bank: Inform your bank and credit card company about your travel plans to prevent declined transactions or account freezes.

  • Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Banking: To prevent identity theft, avoid logging into bank accounts over public Wi-Fi. If necessary, use a VPN for added security.

Personal Safety Tips

  • Stay Alert & Aware: Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in busy tourist areas, where pickpocketing is common.

  • Keep Valuables to a Minimum: Avoid carrying expensive jewelry, large amounts of cash, or unnecessary valuables.

  • Use Anti-Theft Accessories: A money belt, RFID-blocking wallet, or cross-body bag with a secure zipper can help deter theft.

  • Be Cautious at Night: Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas. Stick to busy, well-lit streets.

  • Stay Vigilant in Crowds: Tourist attractions, train stations, and public transportation hubs are prime spots for pickpocketing. Keep your wallet in a front pocket or money belt.

  • Be Skeptical of Strangers: Scammers may appr "ach tour" sts with distractions or "friendly" offers. Politely decline and walk away.

  • Keep Emergency Contacts Handy: Carry a list of emergency contacts, including the local U.S. embassy or consulate.

  • Learning basic local phrases, such as "Help" or "I need assistance," in the local language can be beneficial.

Transportation Tips

  • Validate Your Ticket: If you are using public transportation, ensure that you validate your ticket before boarding to avoid fines.

  • Use Trusted Rideshare or Taxis: Stick to licensed taxis or ride-sharing apps like Uber or Bolt to avoid unregulated drivers.

  • Use Official Transport Services: At airports and train stations, only use official taxi stands and shuttle services for safety. By following these travel tips, you'll have a safer, smoother, and more enjoyable trip. Safe travels!
