Travel Tips & Packing List

Traveling to Ireland and Scotland in June is a fantastic choice. With mild temperatures, long daylight hours, and stunning landscapes in full bloom, it’s an ideal time to explore. Below are essential travel tips and a packing guide to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Packing List

Clothing

June temperatures typically range from 50–65°F (10–18°C), but the weather can be unpredictable, with occasional rain and wind. Layering is key.

  • Lightweight, breathable layers (T-shirts, long-sleeve shirts)
  • A warm sweater or fleece for cooler mornings and evenings
  • A waterproof jacket – rain showers are frequent
  • Comfortable walking shoes (waterproof if possible) or hiking boots for cobblestone streets and nature trails
  • A compact umbrella or hooded raincoat for sudden rain showers
  • Scarf, hat, and gloves (especially in Scotland, where it can be windy)

Other Essentials

  • Universal power adapter (Ireland and Scotland both use Type G plugs)
  • Reusable water bottle (tap water is safe to drink)
  • Daypack for excursions and hikes
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses (the sun can be stronger than expected)
  • Binoculars (for spotting wildlife in the Highlands or along the coast)
  • Motion sickness tablets (if taking ferries or driving on winding roads)

Weather & Daylight

  • Long daylight hours – Sunset is as late as 10:30 PM in Scotland and 10:00 PM in Ireland
  • Mild temperatures, but rain is common
  • Windy conditions, especially in Scotland – pack accordingly

Money & Payments

Currencies

  • Ireland (Republic of Ireland) uses the Euro (€)
  • Scotland (United Kingdom) uses British Pound Sterling (£)

Payment Tips

  • Credit cards are widely accepted, but carry some cash for small towns and rural areas
  • ATMs are easily available, but check if your bank charges international withdrawal fees
  • Tipping is not expected but rounding up the bill or leaving 5–10% for excellent service is appreciated
  • Avoid paying in US dollars, as they are not commonly accepted and will result in poor exchange rates

Taxis & Rideshares

  • Uber is limited in both countries – use local taxi apps such as FreeNow in Ireland or book taxis in advance in Scotland

Food & Dining

Must-Try Dishes

  • Ireland: Irish stew, soda bread, boxty, fresh seafood, full Irish breakfast
  • Scotland: Haggis, neeps and tatties, Cullen skink, fresh salmon

Pub Culture

  • Pubs often serve excellent food, but kitchens may close by 9:00 or 10:00 PM
  • Tipping is not required, but rounding up the bill is appreciated

Whiskey & Beer

  • In Ireland, try Guinness, Jameson whiskey, and local craft beers
  • In Scotland, visit a distillery to experience Scotch whisky

Cultural Etiquette & Local Customs

  • Be polite and friendly – locals are warm and welcoming
  • In traditional pubs, it is common to take turns buying rounds of drinks
  • Small talk is valued, and engaging with locals is encouraged
  • Respect historic sites, as many places have deep cultural significance

Must-See Highlights in June

Ireland

  • Dublin: Trinity College, Guinness Storehouse, Temple Bar, St. Stephen’s Green

Final Travel Tips

  • Stay flexible – the weather can change quickly
  • Respect nature and follow "leave no trace" principles when hiking
  • Do not rely solely on Google Maps – some rural areas have poor GPS coverage

By following these tips, you will be well-prepared for an unforgettable adventure in Ireland and Scotland this June. Enjoy your trip!

European Travel Tips

Travel Tips: Money, Safety, and Transportation

Money & Currency Tips

  • Use Local ATMs: Withdraw Euros (€) from reputable bank ATMs for the best exchange rates. Avoid EuroNet ATMs, as they charge excessive fees.
  • Watch Out for High Conversion Rates: Some ATMs may offer currency conversion with rates as high as 11-15%—decline this option and choose to be charged in Euros instead.
  • Use a Currency Converter App: Apps like XE Currency help you track real-time exchange rates.
  • Always Pay in Euros: If a merchant asks whether to process your card in USD or Euros, always choose Euros to avoid additional conversion fees.
  • Carry Small Bills & Coins: Cash is widely used, especially for small purchases like drinks or bathroom access. Keep small denominations handy.
  • Tipping Etiquette: Tipping is not expected, but rounding up the bill or leaving 5-10% for good service is appreciated.
  • Use Up Your Coins: Euro coins cannot be exchanged back in the U.S., so spend them before you leave.

Financial Safety Tips

  • Stay Aware: Be mindful of your surroundings and avoid displaying large amounts of cash in public.
  • Split Up Cash & Cards: Keep your cash, credit cards, and important documents in different places—some in a wallet, some in a secure money belt, and some in your luggage.
  • Secure Your Belongings: Keep your wallet close to your body, and never leave your purse or backpack unattended. A cross-body purse with a secure zipper is ideal.
  • Use ATMs Wisely: Withdraw money from well-lit, secure locations, such as inside a bank. Avoid any ATM that looks tampered with.
  • Check Statements Regularly: Monitor your bank and credit card transactions to spot any unauthorized charges.
  • Use Credit Cards for Larger Purchases: Credit cards provide better fraud protection than debit cards and often come with travel perks like insurance and no foreign transaction fees.
  • Notify Your Bank: Let your bank and credit card company know about your travel plans to avoid declined transactions or account freezes.
  • Avoid Public Wi-Fi for Banking: To prevent identity theft, avoid logging into bank accounts over public Wi-Fi. If necessary, use a VPN for added security.

Personal Safety Tips

  • Stay Alert & Aware: Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in busy tourist areas, where pickpocketing is common.
  • Keep Valuables to a Minimum: Avoid carrying expensive jewelry, large amounts of cash, or unnecessary valuables.
  • Use Anti-Theft Accessories: A money belt, RFID-blocking wallet, or cross-body bag with a secure zipper can help deter theft.
  • Be Cautious at Night: Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas. Stick to busy, well-lit streets.
  • Stay Vigilant in Crowds: Tourist attractions, train stations, and public transportation hubs are prime spots for pickpocketing. Keep your wallet in a front pocket or money belt.
  • Be Skeptical of Strangers: Scammers may approach tourists with distractions or "friendly" offers. Politely decline and walk away.
  • Keep Emergency Contacts Handy: Carry a list of emergency contacts, including the local U.S. embassy or consulate.
  • Learn Basic Local Phrases: Knowing simple phrases like “Help” or “I need assistance” in the local language can be beneficial.

Transportation Tips

  • Validate Your Ticket: If using public transportation, make sure to validate your ticket before boarding to avoid fines.
  • Use Trusted Rideshare or Taxis: Stick to licensed taxis or ride-sharing apps like Uber or Bolt to avoid unregulated drivers.
  • Use Official Transport Services: At airports and train stations, only use official taxi stands and shuttle services for safety.

By following these travel tips, you’ll have a safer, smoother, and more enjoyable trip. Safe travels!

My friends and I had the best time visiting Zion and Bryce Canyon! The accommodations were beautiful. We enjoyed the wrap-around deck views, relaxing in the hot tub after hiking, and the star-gazing was phenomenal! Alle was a very knowledgeable yoga instructor who did a great job of guiding us through stretches and flows to prepare us for hiking and address any aches and pains afterwards. The concierge service and direction she provided in the parks was a fabulous and worry-free way to travel. Our chef, Amber, completely spoiled us with her delicious, healthy cooking to fuel our hikes and her desserts were off the charts! Thanks for taking such good care of us :) It was fun to meet like-minded yogis and nature lovers from across the country!

I was amazed by the care and kindness by everyone involved. My room was amazing. Loved the hot tub. The views and the walks were breathtaking. A personal chef, come on. A Yoga instructor, come on. The car ride was more than I expected getting to and from the cabin. Other than that, I had the best time. Highly recommend visiting! (Oh, bring an analog watch.)

Thank you, Christina! We’re so glad you felt the care and kindness from our team—it’s exactly what we hope every guest experiences. From the views and hikes to the hot tub and chef-prepared meals (yes, come on! 😄), we’re thrilled it all came together for a trip you’ll remember. And love the analog watch tip—we might need to add that to our packing list! Hope to see you again on another retreat soon.

This was my second trip with Walker Wellness, this time to celebrate my 50th birthday. Cherry blossoms in Japan has been a long time bucket list trip for me, and Amy did not disappoint. From the moment I signed up, she was in communication with me to ensure the itinerary was everything I wanted. Her attention to detail and excellent service along with first class luxury experience made this a trip I will never forget. We were a small group of five women, I travelled solo and felt more comfortable abroad not knowing the language to go with a retreat group that I knew and had a great experience with before. Immediately, the other women embraced me into their fold, and now I feel like I have made new friends that I would easily travel with again. If you’re on the fence, do not hesitate, I can’t imagine a better way to experience Japan for the first time! I’ll definitely be traveling with them again!
