Bioluminescence Costa Rica

A group of us - 8 in all including 4 children ages 5-10 - took this tour in late July and it was amazing! The booking, payment, and other logistic/ were quick and easy. Alex was communicative. Our guide was kind and informative. What we saw felt like magic. Our hands glowed in the water, our paddles looked they were tracing arcs of light across the surface, our legs as we swam glowed. It was like the stars were in the water. I can’t recommed this experience enough!

Lots of paddling in the dark with very little to see. Not a lot of bioluminescence to see other than the end of our paddles.
Maybe our expectations were too high.
Might be fine for others.

Bioluminescent Kayak Tour    * familly tour*

This is one my favorite experiences as I was in Costa Rica. If you are close by you have to do this! We stated on the canoes right before sunset- watched the sky fill with colors and then paddled to the area of the amazing bioluminescent in the water! We even got to swim with it!

100% recomendable. Este tour empieza antes de los otros tours de bioluminiscencia, esto hace que vayas viendo cómo poco a poco se va activando, hasta que es completamente de noche. Estuvimos solos, y al volver es cuando venían los otros empezando. Giovanni nos transmitió su ilusión por esta actividad, y volvimos a ser niños de nuevo, bañándonos y jugando con el agua y las lucecitas. Incluso terminamos media hora más tarde. No os perdáis la Galaxia de Giovanni.

I know that it is a phenomenon „made by nature“ - so you are not able to presict or promise how much you would see. But it was too expensive for the little we did see. A bit of paddling around and a marginal luminosity. On top of that, the guide said right at the beginning that it was currently "very weak." We would have liked to have known this before booking. Disappointing for the price.

Kayaking with sunset and in the dark was nice. The guide explained everything really well. And the bioluminescence was cool to see (but you are not really able to make pictures or video’s of it). We had a good time with our family.

We had a wonderful time in our kayaks.
Almost new moon, no rain … so ideal.
It was an “avatar-like” magical experience.
We regretted that you could not film/photogtaph it, on the other hand, we enjoyed the experience to the max

Bioluminescent Kayak Tour 8pm

It was magical experience! We had a chance to swim in the water. The guide was awesome, we learned a lot!

We had such a great time, it was wonderful. The water with the plankton was so blue and shiny, once in a lifetime experience to swim in the biolmuninescene 😍 Even on pictures and videos with the phone it was very bright and good to see. 

10/10 experience. We had a lightning storm in the distance that only added to the experience. Cameras can't capture the beauty,  so it's truly a must see in person experience. 

The guys showing the bioluminescence where superb. You have to know, that bioluminescence does in reality not look bluish, but rather like stars sparkling in the water, which is still amazing. The place was perfect for it!

We had a really wonderful time on our bioluminescence boat tour! Our guide told us a lot about the islands and the water and the different things around the tour. It was so fun, touching the water and seeing what looked like stars coming out of my fingers! I’ve told everybody about that experience. We had some friends who did the kayak and I don’t think it was as memorable, but they did enjoy it.

The trip was really exciting.  Once the sky darkened, we were treated to a spectacular display of bioluminescence.  The guide was engaging and patient.    It was a great value for the money.  I have already recommended this to my friends.

Easy Beautiful kayak on beautiful bay and bioluminescence was so plentiful and extraordinary!!!! Guide was friendly and laid back. 

Nous sommes allés le 20 février 2025 et c’était un jour nuageux. Alex et Yohany nous ont guidés de façon sécuritaire sur le long du rivage jusqu’à l’endroit idéal pour voir la bioluminescence. Nous sommes débarqué de notre kayak pour nager dans l’eau. C’était peu profond et sécuritaire. Nous avons pu voir et apprécié le phénomène. C’était m a g n i f i q u e ! Merci !

Really didn’t see anything and got eaten alive by bugs. The guides were nice, but I wouldn’t do it again.

Friendly, patient, accommodating. They were very understanding when we missed our ferry and picked us up from the next one  with no extra charge. Driver was incredibly patient and helpful in understanding our somewhat complex directions to an unmarked rental house. Would highly recommend this service.

Great experience. Dark, new moon made for bright bioluminescence.  Even had the opportunity to get in the water to fully experience!

We had a great time and the bioluminescence was plentiful!  Kids even got out of there kayaks to swim in it; it was a very memorable evening!

What a wonderful day with Emily and Alonso! We were a party of 4 adults and the group was only 2 more. As a small group, they were able to tailor the trip to our liking. Snorkelling was lots of fun and Tortuga Island is beautiful. We also saw Monkey Island and a lot of other islands and landscapes including Rainbow Rock which aren't included on the big tours. But the highlight was travelling with locals who knew so much about the area. We were invited to Alonso's home on the waterfront for a delicious lunch. Emily has many firsthand stories about the history, including that her mum looked after the spider monkeys until they were released onto the island! Ask her about it. She's a lovely and interesting human. Highly recommended :)

Qué día tan maravilloso con Emily y Alonso. Éramos un grupo de 4 adultos y el grupo era sólo 2 más. Como grupo pequeño, pudieron adaptar el viaje a nuestro gusto. Hacer snorkel fue muy divertido y la Isla Tortuga es hermosa. También vimos Monkey Island y muchas otras islas y paisajes, incluido Rainbow Rock, que no están en los grandes recorridos. Pero lo más destacado fue viajar con lugareños que sabían mucho sobre la zona. Nos invitaron a la casa de Alonso en el paseo marítimo para un delicioso almuerzo. Emily tiene muchas historias de primera mano sobre la historia, ¡incluyendo que su madre cuidó a los monos araña hasta que fueron liberados en la isla! Pregúntale al respecto. Es una humana encantadora e interesante. Altamente recomendado :)

we had a great time! the people were amazing and they went out of their way to make sure our bioluminescence experience was good.

The tour was okay. Really friendly guides! We felt really good in their hands. The bioluminescent was not much seeable unfortunately. Sometimes small dots in the water were shining. I guess it also depends on the days. Other than that, what was not great, the family with their kid that was screaming that it does not want to do the tour several times. Unfortunately the tour guide did not take it into account and the family still was going with us even that their kid did not wanted to - well that kid will be traumatised for life. I wished that the tour guide would have said that the family should stay with their kid back at the beach.

We had a great tour guide and got lots of bioluminescence, which was very pretty. We kayaked about a kilometer around the bay and back looking at the beautiful blue bioluminescence. Recommend bringing waterproof shoes and a change of clothes because it gets wet, but fantastic experience!

Bioluminescent Kayak Tour green season

This is a truly once in a lifetime experience! Our tour was well organized with a small group, and our guides offered a short explanation of the science behind this beautiful phenomenon. We felt safe which was extra important because we took our kids with us. When we asked, our guides even loaned us a dry bag to put our phones in once it became clear that trying to snap a few pics without getting our phones wet just wasn't going to happen. Even without any pictures I'm sure this is a memory I'll have forever though! 

when you booked we hold the spot for you, you did not make it on time, but  you say you will come for the 8pm did not show up and like 4 days after that requested the money back, which were just $10 deposit .

 i told you we will go with only with you at 8pm if you come but you did not reporting that were not showing up. is the main reason for not returning your deposit.  sorry for the inconvinience 

Sincerely, I had my problem and didn't attend the tour, but sadly after asking if a refund was to be received if I couldn't and receiving a positive answer no refund was guaranteed and after further enquiry the initial positive answer became negative. To that it was added that the terms and conditions are not really readable from the site so that no further investigation could be done.

This was an interesting place to visit.   Emily did the tour for us and we toured the old prison and a small part of the island.

From there we went fishing, saw wildlife, and stopped on the beach of an island for some fresh fruit.


San Lucas Tour

Nous avons eu une super belle expérience kayak evec mer biolescence.. C est un   MUST DO..  c est absolument  hallucinant, féérique même je dirait.. Le phénomène est très présent dans l eau. Il pleuvait un peux et même les goutelettes qui tombaient dans la mer s éblouissaient.. MAGIQUE. GRAND MERCI.GRACIAS


We had a great time Juan Carlos was early and it was just us so we left quickly.  Sergio the “driver”. let my husband fish and he caught a small fish!  The bioluminesce was really cool to see,  would recommend

 A must do when you are in Costa Rica. Amazing.  Staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and professional.  To see yourself glowing while swimming in the warm Pacific Ocean.  I was in love.

The bioluminescent kayak tour was so adventurous and unique.  The guides were nice and informative. It started raining but it made the experience even more exciting. We kayaked around the island and the bioluminescence was magical. We laughed a lot as it rained harder and harder. They didn’t cancel or cut it short but let us enjoy the whole tour. Overall, I would recommend this for a fun adventure in Costa Rica. 

The tour was fantastic and super organized. The guide was always watching for us so we felt super safe and comfortable the whole time. Our highlight was to swim by night and see the whole beauty of the bioluminescentic plankton. This tour is a must do when you stay at Nicoya island. 

We had a great time.  A definite must to see the bioluminescence by kayak.  Like fairy dust flying as you paddle. 

Ok, the people were very nice, the kayak and the equipment very good.

But we have not seen much bioluminescence. Our guide had to jump in the water and take some water with his t-shirt to show us some light. That part was a bit deceiving. We saw some by moving water with our paddle.

The actual Bioluminescence was very cool.

I think this tour could improve a lot by smoothing out the logistics. On our tour there was no orientation given on land. Once we had a dozen people in kayaks on the bay, the tour guide began to explain the tour over the sound of waves in the dark. We couldn't hear half of what he was saying and it was difficult to focus on listening when you're trying to stay in the same place with your kayak. During the tour the guides would occasionally shine a light but we were never sure if he was directing us to keep paddling or to stop. Again, an orientation on this would have made things much easier. The launch point is also very dirty - lots of driftwood and garbage washing up from the bay. It didn't make it enticing to get in the water.

We organized a three day trip from Samara to Paquera JUST to do the bioluminescence tour. Absolutely worth it. The guides were very knowledgeable and knew where to take us for the most concentrations - so the bioluminescence was very intense.  The kids lost their minds when they looked into the water and could see the trails left by fish swimming in the bioluminescence. So cool.

We enjoyed our 8 pm kayak tour. The bioluminescence was spectacular and thoroughly enjoyed paddling around and swimming in it. Such an amazing sight to see would definitely recommend this tour to anyone. I would say out of all the ways you could go see this kayaks was by far the best choice nothing beats a night paddle with amazing bioluminescence!!

We had an absolute blast. It was so amazing to see bright colors. We went 5 days after a full moon and the lighting was perfect. Our favorite part was getting out of the kayaks and swimming in some chect deep water and watching each other swim under the water. It was like Moana. Amazing time. The hosts were great. We drove down from Tamarindo to catch the 8pm session just for this and drove back that same night. Worth it.
