From the ancient streets of Rome to the vineyard-covered hills of Tuscany and the canals of Venice, this 9-day, 8-night all-inclusive retreat brings together three of Italy's most unforgettable places in one journey. Walk in the footsteps of emperors, sip Chianti where it's made, and end each day with a long dinner and the kind of views that make you want to slow down and stay a while.
What to Expect:
This retreat leans active. You'll travel by train between Rome, Florence, and Venice and explore each city on foot, often over cobblestones and uneven steps, so comfortable shoes and steady mobility are a must. Highlights include a private tour of the Colosseum and Imperial Rome, the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica, Michelangelo's David at the Accademia, a full day of wine tasting in the Chianti hills, the medieval towns of Siena and San Gimignano, and a private tour of the Doge's Palace and St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. Between excursions, there's free time to wander, shop, or linger over a long lunch. As with all of our retreats, every activity is optional, so you can join in as much or as little as you like and shape the trip around what feels best to you.
Accommodations & Inclusions:
Stay at The Tribune, JDV by Hyatt in the heart of Rome; Villa Petriolo, a vineyard estate in the Tuscan hills with an infinity pool and on-site restaurants; and Sina Palazzo Sant'Angelo, an SLH Hotel, a boutique hotel right on Venice's Grand Canal. Private airport transfers into Rome, a private water taxi to the Venice airport, and train travel from Rome to Florence to Venice are all included. Private guided tours, skip-the-line entry tickets, Chianti wine tastings, group dinners each evening, and gratuities for guides, drivers, and group meals are covered, so you can simply show up and enjoy.

A note before you start packing: One of the best things you can do to make this trip easier on yourself is to pack light. Packing Tips:
Choose a suitcase you can lift on your own. You'll place your bag on luggage racks for our train rides, and Venice has no cars, so bags often travel over bridges and small steps.
Break in your walking shoes before you leave, since Rome, Florence, Siena, and Venice all involve a lot of time on cobblestones.
Keep a scarf in your daypack every day so you're always ready to step into a church, even outside our scheduled tours.
Leave a little room for Tuscan wine, olive oil, or leather goods from Florence's markets.
1. Weather and Clothing
Late May is one of the loveliest times to visit Italy, with warm, mostly sunny days and cooler evenings.
Rome and Florence typically range from about 58-80°F (14-27°C), and afternoons in the city can feel warmer on stone streets.
Venice runs slightly cooler, around 57-73°F (14-23°C), with breezes off the water in the evening.
Spring showers are possible, so a packable rain jacket or small umbrella is worth bringing.
Wear supportive walking shoes with good grip for cobblestones, ancient steps, and Venice's many bridges.
Shoulders and knees must be covered at the Vatican and St. Mark's Basilica, so plan those outfits ahead or carry a scarf or shawl.
Pack a couple of dressier outfits for our group dinners in Rome, Tuscany, and Venice.
2. Money and Currency
Italy uses the euro (€).
ATMs attached to banks (labeled "Bancomat") are the best way to get cash. Avoid Euronet and other standalone machines in tourist areas, which charge high fees.
If a card machine or ATM offers to charge you in U.S. dollars, always choose euros. The conversion rate is much worse in dollars.
Download the XE Currency app to check prices quickly.
Keep small bills and coins handy for coffee, gelato, and restroom fees.
Many restaurants add a small "coperto" (cover charge) per person, which is normal and not a tip.
Tipping in Italy is modest. Leaving a few euros or rounding up for good service is appreciated, but a 20% tip is not expected. Gratuities for our guides, drivers, and group meals are already included.
Use up your coins before you leave, since they can't be exchanged back.
3. Financial Safety
Split your cash, cards, and documents between your daypack, a money belt or zippered pocket, and your hotel safe.
Keep your wallet or purse close to your body and never hang a bag on the back of a chair.
Use ATMs inside banks or in well-lit areas during the day.
Notify your bank and credit card company of your travel dates to prevent account freezes.
Use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees for larger purchases.
Use a VPN if you need to access banking or other sensitive information on public Wi-Fi.
4. Personal Safety
Italy is very safe for travelers, and the main concern is pickpocketing in crowded areas.
Stay especially alert at Roma Termini station, the Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Vatican lines, crowded buses and metro cars in Rome, and around the Rialto Bridge in Venice.
Politely decline anyone offering "free" bracelets, roses, or asking you to sign a petition. These are common distraction tactics.
Wear a crossbody bag in front of you and leave flashy jewelry at home.
The emergency number throughout Italy is 112.
U.S. travelers can enroll in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) before departure.
A few helpful phrases: "Aiuto" (help), "Mi scusi" (excuse me), and "Parla inglese?" (do you speak English?).
5. Transportation
Our private airport transfer in Rome, train tickets, and hotel transfers are all arranged for you.
We'll take high-speed Italo trains from Rome to Florence (about 1.5 hours) and Florence to Venice (just over 2 hours). Tickets are reserved for the group, so there's nothing to validate.
On train days, have your bag packed and ready so we can move easily through the station. You'll lift your own bag onto the luggage racks.
If you take a regional train or bus on your own, validate paper tickets in the machine before boarding to avoid fines.
In Rome, use official white taxis from marked stands or a ride app. Avoid drivers who approach you.
Venice has no cars. You'll get around on foot or by vaporetto (water bus). Tap your ticket on the reader each time you board.
A private water taxi will take you from our Venice hotel to the airport on departure day.
6. Sightseeing and Excursions
Skip-the-line entry is included for the Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Accademia, Doge's Palace, and St. Mark's Basilica.
Bring your passport or photo ID on our Rome tour day, since it's required for Colosseum entry.
All group tours, wine tastings, and dinners are included, and participation is always optional.
For quieter moments in Rome, wander Trastevere or peek through the famous keyhole on Aventine Hill.
In Florence, walk up to San Miniato al Monte for sweeping views of the city, especially near sunset.
In Venice, slip away from St. Mark's and explore the Cannaregio neighborhood, where locals actually live.
7. Dining and Cuisine
In Rome, try cacio e pepe, carbonara, and supplì (fried rice balls).
In Tuscany, look for ribollita, pici pasta, bistecca alla fiorentina, and of course Chianti Classico.
In Venice, try cicchetti (small bites) at a bacaro with a spritz, and fresh seafood like sarde in saor.
Coffee is cheaper standing at the bar, and cappuccino is traditionally a morning drink.
For the best gelato, skip the brightly colored mounded displays and look for shops that keep it in covered metal tins.
Italians dine later than we do. Our group dinner reservations are already made, but book ahead for any meals on your own at popular spots.
Tipping is modest. Rounding up or leaving a few euros is plenty.
8. Health and Comfort
Tap water is safe throughout Italy. Rome's public drinking fountains ("nasoni") are a great place to refill your water bottle.
Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen on long walking days.
Pack blister care and take breaks when you need them.
Pharmacies are marked with a green cross and pharmacists can help with minor issues.
Keep personal medications in their original packaging in your carry-on.
9. Packing and Luggage
Bring one suitcase you can easily lift, since you'll handle it on trains and over Venice bridges.
Packing cubes make it easy to move between our three hotels.
Travel laundry soap is handy for a quick sink wash midway through the trip.
10. Technology and Communication
Italy uses Type C, F, and L plugs at 230 volts. Most phone and laptop chargers work fine with an adapter, but hair tools may need a converter or dual-voltage design.
Check your phone plan's international options or set up an eSIM before you leave.
Download offline maps of Rome, Florence, and Venice, plus a translation app like Google Translate.
Keep digital copies of your passport, insurance, and confirmations as a backup.
11. Mindset and Enjoyment
Italians have a phrase, "dolce far niente," the sweetness of doing nothing. Make time for it.
Some shops close in the early afternoon and meals are meant to be savored, so embrace the slower pace.
Weather or local events may shift the schedule a little. Stay flexible and go with it.
Linger over an espresso in a piazza, watch the sunset over the Tuscan hills, and get a little lost in Venice.
Balance sightseeing with rest so you come home feeling restored, not exhausted.
