About this trip

The Region: :

Piedmont rests at the foot of the Alps and is located in the northwestern part of Italy.

Neighboring France and Austria this region has a strong history with a rich and diverse gastronomy that rivals any Italian region.

An exceptional terroir has also made this region one of the most sought after for Italian wines including the iconic varieties of Barolo and Barbaresco. The famous white truffle is also well known to this

area, especially in the city of Alba. Additionally, the Slow Food movement has their global headquarters located here.

The city of Torino, also know as the Paris of Italy and the original capital of Italy, has encountered a recent revival of sorts with a cultural kick start since the 2006 Olympics, that has seen a new gastronomic, architecture, contemporary art and design scene develop in the city.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Day 3
Alba- Barolo - Slow Food

Day 1: Arrival

Meeting point will be in Turin (the capital of the region).

Suggested arrival will be at Milan or Genoa airports, which have easy transportation to Turin; your pick up point.

Upon your arrival you will be driven by private transport into the heart of Piedmont, Le Langhe region. We will spend our first 5 nights in Le Langhe.

Our first night will be an opening celebration of the week. We will host a dinner together, complemented with local wine and food followed by a brief introduction of everyone and our weekly schedule.

DAY 2: Alba - Barolo

We will depart following breakfast to the city center of Alba located just a short drive away.

Alba is considered the capital of white truffles and receives an enormous amount of attention each year for this specific variety of fungi that is almost exclusive to the region.

Upon arrival we will take a short walk around the main part of town, and then allow you to explore the city center, we will then meet for lunch in the city center at a local Osteria.

After lunch we will drive to Barolo, exloring the rich and world renowned wine that takes its name.

Day 3: Bra - Cheese - Slow Food

We will begin our day in Bra, a small city located south of the capital Turin. Bra is the headquarters of the Slow Food movement and the location of the University of Gastronomic Sciences.

Today you will get dirty! Cooking it up in a local restaurant, learning to prepare some traditional local recipes with a local chef.

After your cooking class and lunch we will have a short break, allowing you to better see the city and relax before we meet at Giolito Cheeses. Considered the best artisanal cheese maker and seller in Bra, we will hold another seminar that includes tasting, identifying and examining cheeses typical of Piedmont.

Following our visit to Giolito we will visit Locale, for an aperitivo. Locale is a Slow Food-student run business specializing in local high quality products.

Unique experiences, lovely people, and we didn't have to plan a thing! Their flexibility to modify the itinerary based on our preferences was great. A wonderful introduction to Provence.

Highly recommend Gastro-Travel to EVERYONE!! We can't wait to join them again in France! Our experience with Matt and Paul from Gastro travel at the Olive harvest last November was incredible!! Such a great way to discover the region as well as learning about olive oil production and harvesting, foraging and cooking skills! The passion and enthusiasm of their team for sharing their knowledge of the land, the food, their history and their hopes for the future makes this experience so much more than a vacation! Book now if you want to travel and learn!!

Italy is truly heaven on Earth! Gastro-Travel showed us the most in-depth and local experience we could ever wish for! We love the outdoors and the slow food movement so this combined the best of both worlds--a bit of hiking, a bit of cooking, delicious meals paired with great wine, and great new people to share it all with. The Gastro-Travel guides were wonderful and always there to take care of us. Getting to know the other guests (from Australia,Poland, and Scandinavia) was wonderful too!
