Day 5 - Travel Day

Day 6 - Mooretown Maroon Community – Maroons ran away from plantations and formed their own communities. They fought the British in a war from 1655 – 1738/9. Mooretown is one of the largest Maroon communities nestled in the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica. 

Day 6 Cont'd - Boston Bay – Jerk Pork. Africans, the Tainos (who merged as a Maroon community), and Buccaneers (pirates) would trade jerked meats.

Day 7 - Travel Day with stops in Mineral Baths – St. Thomas Bath |

Morant Bay site of the 1865 Morant Bay Rebellion. Hundreds of Jamaica’s peasantry rose up demanding that Jamaica give them access to land, better wages, better housing, political participation, and a better shake in the criminal justice system.

Day 8 - Port Royal: home of the first capital of Jamaica under the British. Was a place where pirates would hang out. | Lime Cay: beach off of Kingston’s coast. Featured in the Jimmy Cliff movie The Harder They Come. The movie portrayed the poverty faced by Jamaicans and the impact that had on Black men. The creation of the “Bad Boi.”

Day 9 - Bob Marley Day: Reggae was a music of resistance given middle class Jamaican’s opinion of Rastafarianism and ganja as we call it. Trenchtown, where Marley started living in Kingston, is the home of Tuff Gong Records, his label and studio and the Marley Museum was created from the house he lived in at his death.
