About this trip

Join Shaya Collective for our Global Leadership Immersion: Benin—a transformative journey exploring heritage, leadership, spirituality, and cultural resilience in one of West Africa's most historically significant nations.

Benin is a country where ancient kingdoms, vibrant traditions, and living cultural heritage continue to shape everyday life. From the powerful Kingdom of Dahomey to the sacred city of Ouidah and the remarkable stilt village of Ganvié, Benin offers an extraordinary opportunity to explore the interconnected stories of leadership, community, identity, and resilience that have influenced both Africa and the global African Diaspora.

Throughout this immersive experience, participants will engage with Benin's rich history through royal palaces, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, museums, historic communities, and meaningful conversations with local cultural leaders. You'll discover how the country's diverse ethnic communities—including the Fon, Yoruba, Bariba, Fulani, and others—have preserved traditions, languages, and cultural practices that continue to thrive today.

Participants will explore the historic Kingdom of Dahomey in Abomey, learning about its systems of leadership, governance, military history, and cultural influence. In Ouidah, you'll reflect on Benin's role in the transatlantic slave trade through visits to the Door of No Return while also gaining insight into Vodun (Vodoun), one of the world's oldest living spiritual traditions, whose influence extends across the African Diaspora.

The journey also includes a visit to Ganvié, a remarkable lakeside community built on stilts, where participants will learn how generations have adapted to their environment while preserving a unique way of life. Additional experiences may include visits to traditional communities, local markets, artisan workshops, and cultural performances that celebrate Benin's rich artistic and historical legacy.

This experience extends beyond historical exploration. Through cultural exchange, community engagement, guided reflection, and shared experiences, participants will deepen their understanding of resilience, ethical leadership, cultural preservation, and global interconnectedness while building meaningful relationships across cultures.

Inspired by the belief that every person possesses inherent dignity and worth, Shaya Collective creates transformational learning experiences that cultivate humility, curiosity, empathy, and ethical leadership. Participants leave with a deeper appreciation for Benin's remarkable history and cultural heritage, meaningful global connections, and practical insights they can apply in their organizations, campuses, communities, and everyday lives.
