About this trip

Join Shaya Collective for our Global Leadership Immersion: Indigenous Heritage in Southeast Asia—a transformative journey exploring identity, belonging, resilience, and the living cultures of some of Asia's oldest Indigenous communities.

Across Southeast Asia, Indigenous peoples have preserved unique languages, traditions, and ways of life for thousands of years. Despite their deep historical roots, many Indigenous communities continue to face challenges related to recognition, land rights, cultural preservation, and social inclusion. This immersive experience invites participants to explore these histories while building meaningful relationships with communities whose perspectives offer valuable lessons in leadership, sustainability, and human dignity.

Participants will travel to either the Philippines to engage with the Aeta community or Malaysia to learn from the Batek people of Taman Negara. Through respectful cultural exchange, local partnerships, and community-led experiences, you'll gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and the resilience that has enabled these communities to preserve their cultural identity across generations.

Throughout the journey, participants will explore the historical and contemporary experiences of Indigenous peoples, examine how colonialism, modernization, and environmental change have shaped their communities, and reflect on the importance of protecting cultural heritage, traditional knowledge, and ancestral lands.

Beyond history, this experience offers opportunities to immerse yourself in breathtaking natural landscapes while learning about Indigenous relationships with the environment, community governance, storytelling, craftsmanship, and everyday life. These experiences encourage thoughtful dialogue about stewardship, inclusion, cultural preservation, and the many ways communities define belonging.

This immersion extends beyond observation. Through guided reflection, cultural exchange, and meaningful community engagement, participants will develop greater cultural awareness, empathy, and appreciation for diverse perspectives while strengthening their ability to lead with humility, curiosity, and respect across cultures.

Inspired by the belief that every person possesses inherent dignity and worth, Shaya Collective creates transformational learning experiences that cultivate ethical leadership, global citizenship, and meaningful cross-cultural connection. Participants leave with a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures in Southeast Asia, lasting relationships, and practical insights they can apply in their organizations, campuses, communities, and everyday lives.

During this immersion, participants will:

  • Engage respectfully with Indigenous communities through community-led cultural experiences.

  • Learn about the history, traditions, and contemporary realities of the Aeta (Philippines) or Batek (Malaysia) people.

  • Explore how Indigenous communities preserve cultural identity while navigating social, economic, and environmental change.

  • Experience local traditions, food, storytelling, arts, and the natural environments that have sustained these communities for generations.

  • Reflect on leadership, sustainability, cultural preservation, and the importance of belonging in an interconnected world.

  • Develop practical skills in cross-cultural communication, ethical leadership, and global engagement.
