Despite being one of the smallest countries in the region, Nepal boasts impressive multi-ethnic diversity. With a remarkable number of ethnic groups (over 60) and languages (over 124), it is known for its ethnic harmony and multi-ethnic communities.
Its capital city, Kathmandu, has a fascinating cultural mix rarely found elsewhere. While many might associate Kathmandu with its chaotic traffic, bustling markets, and the almost hypnotic colours of its vibrant buildings, the Kathmandu we aim to introduce you to is a pre-industrial remnant of what was once an ancient Himalayan Kingdom.
The Newar people are the primary inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley and its surrounding area in Nepal, and are recognised as the creators of its historical heritage and civilisation. They form a distinct linguistic and cultural group, with Indo-Aryan and Tibeto-Burman origins, sharing the Nepal Bhasa language and predominantly practicing Newar Hinduism and Newar Buddhism. Known for their sophisticated urban civilisation and division of labour, unique in the Himalayan foothills, the Newars have significantly contributed to culture, art, literature, trade, agriculture, and cuisine.
The Newar (Newa:) people are the indigenous ethnic group of the Kathmandu Valley, celebrated for their rich cultural heritage, encompassing distinctive cuisine, intricate arts and crafts, skilled pottery, and vibrant festivals. Historically, they were prominent traders, particularly in the exchange of salt and spices across the region.
Despite the urbanisation of the Kathmandu Valley, many Newar communities have remarkably maintained their ancient way of life, preserving their unique culture, traditions, and especially their renowned cuisine. We offer an exclusive experience designed to challenge the common perception of Kathmandu as merely a chaotic arrival point to depart for trekking from.
This immersive journey allows you to step into a Newar community, stay with local families, and witness firsthand how their centuries-old traditions continue to shape their daily lives, from their culinary practices to all other aspects of their existence. This experience provides a genuine insight into a living culture that thrives within the modern landscape.
