Starting Monday, our journey departs early from St. Charles. Cycling 35 miles west to Dutzow, we'll pass Defiance, famed for Daniel Boone's wise judgments beneath the Judgment Tree. In Dutzow, a shuttle awaits to transport riders to Washington, the only day requiring shuttle service. Each subsequent day, cyclists pedal to accommodations, finding their luggage pre-positioned in their rooms like magic.
Tuesday's leg is an easy 30-mile pedal to McKittrick, followed by two more miles into Hermann, our overnight stop. Hermann, voted "best small city for a weekend getaway" by AAA, boasts numerous historic B&Bs and hotels, with over 150 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, along with a diverse range of antique stores and specialty shops.
Wednesday's route spans 47 miles from Hermann to Jefferson City, Missouri's state capitol. Established in 1839, this scenic town boasts wineries, parks, museums, and historic sites. Discover the remarkable artwork adorning the Missouri state capitol building, adding to the city's cultural richness and offering a unique experience for visitors.
Thursday's 53-mile ride to Boonville offers expansive views of the fast-flowing Missouri River. Boonville, a quaint river town, features historic homes, unique shops, and the refurbished Hotel Frederick, blending vintage charm with modern comforts. Dinner and breakfast at the hotel's cozy lobby and bar complete the nostalgic experience.
From Boonville, the trail meanders 36 miles through woods and small towns to Sedalia. Accommodation is at the historic Hotel Bothwell, operating since 1927 with rumored resident ghosts. Sedalia, incorporated in 1860, flourished with the railroad and had been home to Osage and Shawnee tribes. Dinner and breakfast in the hotel's dining room offer a taste of its rich history.
Saturday's final 38-mile stretch to Clinton marks the ride's conclusion. Highlights include the Bicentennial caboose by our SAG stop in Windsor and the MKT 206 caboose at the trail's end in Clinton, where sadly the tour's last group photo will be taken. After the ride, shower facilities and a light lunch will be provided before shuttling back to St. Charles, typically arriving around 3 pm.
