About your trip

For good skiers and boarders looking for early season powder and cultural immersion in the cold climate of central Asia.

From the resort of Shymbulak straight above the capital, Almaty, to the mountains of North East Kazakhstan, we’ll look for the best possible snow while discovering a captivating country with a  rich history and culture. Led by IFMGA-certified guides.

Highlights Include

  • Ride some early season powder.
  • Immerse yourself in a whole new world in Central Asia, discover a fascinating culture and a long history.
  • Recover from the travel while discovering Almaty and skiing in the neighbouring ski resort, Shymbulak.
  • Fly further in the country to Öskemen and a remote Yurt Camp.
  • Live in traditional yurts with a modern sense of comfort.
  • Eat delicious traditional Kazakh food.
  • Unwind with a sauna after skiing.
  • Get the mountains for yourself: once at the camp, only the two groups accommodated here are skiing the vast terrain that surrounds us: fresh tracks for everyone!
  • Unique combination of IFMGA guides and local knowledge for the best snow and safety.

Activity Levels

The first days in Almaty and Shymbulak are here to help us recover from the trip and we'll start slow. But then, get ready for an adventure ic a cold climate !

  • Average day: 800 to 1400 vertical meters of climbing.
  • Challenge day: If the weather gets very cold, get ready for the experience!

Climate

  • Daily and nightly temperatures: 0°C to below -30°C (32°F to below -20°F)
  • Average daily forecast: -10°C (14°F)
  • What makes visiting at this time of year unique? With the short days and the cold, the landscape gets covered in powder snow, trees are frozen and the air is crisp. All of this gives a special winter feeling that comes on point to start the season!

Touring from the Yurt Camp.

We’ll dive into a very nice routine. After a hearty breakfast in the common yurt, a snowmobile will take us to a new zone everyday. We’ll ski mainly in wide open forests, that look like they’ve been designed for skiers and snowboarders, with safe ridges to tour up and lots of cool runs. Once back at camp, a warm soup and snacks will wait for us. It will then be time to relax and go for a local banya (sauna) before dinner.

Days 11-12 (20-21 Dec)

Returning home.

After saying our goodbyes, the snowmobile will take us back to the road, where the minibuses are waiting for us. Back to Öskemen we’ll fly back to Almaty where we’ll stay for the last night.
