This is the whole package...this is the Impact Marathon for those who want to run with the very best. It is our ultimate running adventure mixed with an immersive experience extraordinary and fabled country, whilst truly uncovering the power of microfinance to empower women and change lives.
From track sessions with the Kenyan elites, to life-changing project visits to a race through the magical tea plantations of East Africa.
Our Kenya Impact Marathon is now in its 3rd year - and has raised over £90k already - but more than that, they saw, felt and understood the impact that money will have by visiting the very projects they supported. This is what makes an Impact Marathon different to any other overseas races.
We offer 3 race distances for you to choose from so don't worry if you're not yet ready to run a full marathon. Challenge yourself on our 21k or 10k course. It's not about personal bests, it's about running together, with others, for others.
Five Talents works with 22,000 entrepreneurs across East Africa, providing them with the basic financial services like a safe place to save that allow them to start small businesses. You'll visit, meet and run with the very people whose lives you are impacting.
IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT THE RACE
Visit the Five Talents financial inclusion programme in Kenya and see for yourself how it changes lives - spend time with some of the 14,500 beneficiaries who access our savings, loans and business skills training.
View the video below to find out about Five Talents UK's work in East Africa and how it impacts the communities you'll be running through. You can also read more about the model, impact, and clients on their website
We ask that each runner raises a suggested amount of £1000, every pound of which will remain in Kenya, impacting the lives of communities like the ones you'll be running through.
Over the course of the year we will provide our runners with fundraising tips and share stories from last years marathon to inspire you in your fundraising. For runners who opt for shorter distances, we are happy to relax our suggested fundraising total a little, though every little helps!
Five Talents has a unique approach to sustainable development. We empower communities to use their own resources to forge a sustainable route out of poverty. We help some of the poorest communities in East Africa by providing basic education and financial services so they can grow their small businesses, increase their incomes and decide for themselves how to invest their profits in their families.
Every pound that is donated in the UK allows our beneficiaries to save and borrow £12. Despite a small footprint in the UK, Five Talents reaches over 22,000 people in rural areas of East Africa and their estimated 110,000 children.
Lucy and her family live in a village in Embu County, in central Kenya - an area where Five Talents has been working for the past six years. Without any reliable income, her children were not always able to attend school and Lucy was worried that like her, they may never complete secondary school.
As soon as she joined the group Lucy began saving the little she could and after 6 months had saved £17 - enough to borrow a loan. Lucy used the loan to build a small wooden shop which she has now grown into a Macadamia nut business using subsequent loans. ‘The savings are a security for me. I felt great when I paid back my first loan and it motivated me to take out my second loan.’
Today, Lucy’s nut businesses is flourishing. At the moment she buys nuts from the farmers and sells them on to the Kenya Nut Company but she has aspirations to work for the company collecting nuts from the ‘middle men’ like herself.
‘As well as being able to pay school fees I now have a cow that provides milk for my family and I even have some extra to sell so I don’t need to buy milk anymore. From the training given by Five Talents I can now budget my money and do a cost analysis for my small business to see where I am making profit.’
The best day!
More than a race, this is a festival of running. We hire out our own private tea plantation to ensure some of the finest trails and views of the outrageous views of the Great Rift Valley. Make no mistake about it, this is a serious running challenge that will push you to dig as deep as you ever have before.
There is no other race in Kenya like this one-of-a-kind route off-the-tourist-track through stunning scenery, gentle hills, tea plantations and the villages where Five Talents UK works.
