Head & Neck Gear (Essential Accessories)

  • Sun hat or cap (wide-brimmed or with neck cover is ideal)

  • Knitted hat / Beanie (for warmth at higher altitudes)

  • Scarf / Neck Gaiter / Buff (highly recommended for dust, wind, and cold)

Torso (Upper Body Clothing)

Arrival Day

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), a Hike Kilimanjaro Ltd representative will transfer you to Planet Lodge in Arusha (or a similar lodge). After check-in, your guide will conduct a full briefing, including a gear check to ensure you’re fully prepared for the trek

Note: The pre-trip briefing will take place at our office if you arrive before 4:00 PM, and at your hotel if you arrive later in the evening. Please ensure you bring a copy of your passport and a readable copy of your travel insurance policy to the meeting. These documents are required for us to obtain your trekking permits and complete necessary documentation for the trek.

Please also note that hotel check-in is from midday (12:00 PM). If your flight arrives early in the morning, kindly let us know in advance. We can arrange a day-use room for you, or, if you prefer, we can organize some short activities to keep you engaged until your check-in time.

Climb from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After breakfast, we drive to Marangu Gate on Kilimanjaro’s southeastern side. Following registration, the trek begins along a well-maintained forest trail, home to blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, and various birds. The path gradually ascends through dense vegetation, opening up to Mandara Hut, where you’ll spend your first night on the mountain.

Climb from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Today’s trek starts with a short climb through the final section of forest before entering open moorland. The trail features giant lobelias and groundsel, iconic high-altitude plants of Kilimanjaro. As you ascend, stunning views of Mawenzi Peak, the mountain’s second-highest summit, emerge. You’ll arrive at Horombo Hut to rest, hydrate, and take in the panoramic scenery.

Acclimatization Climb at Horombo Hut

Spend an extra day at Horombo for acclimatization, a key factor in summit success. Take an optional short hike toward Mawenzi Ridge, then return to Horombo to rest. This allows your body to adjust to the altitude, boosting your chances of reaching the summit.

Climb from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Today’s trek takes you through a high-altitude desert landscape. You’ll pass the famous “Last Water Point” and cross the Saddle, a vast expanse between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The air is thinner here, and the trail feels remote and rugged. Upon reaching Kibo Hut, enjoy an early dinner and rest, preparing for your summit attempt later that night.

Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Your summit attempt begins just after midnight. The trail to Gillman’s Point (5,685 m) is steep and challenging, with switchbacks climbing a rocky slope under starlit skies. From Gillman’s, it’s another 1–2 hours to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point. Arriving at sunrise, you’ll stand on the Roof of Africa, surrounded by glaciers, volcanic craters, and endless skies.

After celebrating your achievement, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night.

  • Hiking Time: 12–16 hours

  • Total Distance: 21 km (13 miles)

  • Ending Elevation: 3,720 m (12,205 ft)

  • Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m (19,341 ft)

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Transfer to Arusha or Moshi

On your final day, descend through the lush montane rainforest, enjoying the sights and sounds of Kilimanjaro’s vibrant lower slopes. The trail may be muddy and slippery, so use trekking poles and step carefully.

At Marangu Gate, receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate from the national park authorities a proud reminder of reaching Uhuru Peak. A freshly prepared hot lunch will be served.

Your Hike Kilimanjaro driver will then transfer you back to Arusha or Moshi, giving you the perfect opportunity to relax, reflect, and celebrate your successful ascent of Africa’s highest mountain.
