This class is exclusively for those who already know how to knit and purl comfortably but wonder what's next. Through a series of small swatches and samples we will explore different cast-ons and bind-offs, increases and decreases, simple cables, lace, and maybe a bobble or two-plus tons of tips and tricks. We will “finish" the week learning how to block and seam like a pro. This fun experience will springboard your knitting far beyond the basics. Advanced beginners and above welcome.
CHARLES D. GANDY, a TKGA Master Knitter, learned to knit at the young age of four from his mother, a designer and shop owner. He designed his first sweater three years later and continues to create today. A two-time winner in Knitter's Magazine "Think Outside the Sox" contest, three of his designs are featured in the book of the same name: "Dread Sox", "Snake in the Grass" and "Pedicure Polka Socks". His own book, The Embellished Sock: Knitted Art for the Foot" features eighteen creative patterns and numerous techniques and is available in yarn shops worldwide. His latest collections “Crazy Socks” and “MORE Crazy Socks” for REGIA Yarns have been received worldwide. Numerous other designs are widely published in leading magazines, books, and on Ravelry. He is a popular teacher at workshops and conferences worldwide. BEYOND THE SOCK, Knitted Art by Charles Gandy, featuring 28 one-of-a-kind sculptural socks was an overwhelming success at The Bascom, A Center for The Arts in Highlands, NC that was on display from March 12 - June 12, 2016. His work placed as a semi-finalist in the 28th Annual World of Wearable Art in Wellington, New Zealand and later was on display at the 7th Wearable Expressions at the Palos Verdes Art Center in California. In February of 2022, HIDDEN FACES: Knitted Masks premiered at the famed 60-year-old Signature Contemporary Crafts Gallery (the oldest craft gallery in North America.) New collections and creations continue to fly off his needles…stay tuned!

Please bring the following:
• A 3 1/2” 3 Ringer Binder and 30-50 Page Protectors
• A skein of WORSTED weight wool – Please NO acrylic! Select a LIGHT-Colored yarn. (Dark yarn is difficult to see stitch definition). Also avoid multi-colored yarn which, like darker colors, is more difficult to see stitch definition. Superwash wool is Ok if you don’t have or can’t find 100% wool. I don’t mind admitting it…I am a yarn snob…thus the wool request. I want to go over some blocking techniques with you and superwash yarn is not the best yarn to teach blocking…and just forget blocking acrylic…so stick to 100% wool, again if you can find it. Doesn’t have to be expensive…just 100% wool, thanks! Superwash WILL work, so don’t fret or panic. Thanks! I realize that some folks are allergic to wool… cotton will be fine!
• Size 6, 7, or 8 needles – whatever size you usually work with worsted weight yarn. We are only going to be casting on a few stitches and working on very small swatches…so double points (DPNs) or straight needles will work fine. (You can use 24” or 32” circulars Needles) Note: If you do not have DPNs, I have tons and will be glad to share.
• Knitting Notions: Tapestry needles, tape measures, row counters, scissors, stitch markers, cable needle, crochet hook size G or H, etc. etc.etc. Again, if you forget I have extras to loan you.
• A notebook and pencils for notetaking – although I will be giving you tons of handouts and you may want to make notes on those handouts.
• I have asked you to bring a 3-ring binder…with protective plastic sleeves. We are going to create what I hope will be an on-going reference book for you. So, you may want to make some of those colored tabs for your binder...this is not necessary…but it will separate the various techniques, one from the other, and make future reference easier.
The headings for these tabs should be:
o Cast Ons/Bind Offs
o Increases
o Decreases
o Lace
o Cables
o Embellishments
o Finishing
o Gauge
o Tips and Tricks
o Tools
o Bibliography
