About this trip

Kona Big Island Yoga and Meditation Adventure Retreat

Dates:

July 7th-14th, 2024

Locale:

Kailua-Kona

Kona, Hawaii on the Big Island

Next summer meet us on the shores of Hawaii Island.

Retreat to Hawaii’s Big Island and enjoy 8 nourishing and enlivening oceanfront days.

Take a deep dive into your yoga practice, guided meditation, nature and the stunning beauty around you, and create a week to slow down and enjoy a week in paradise, and life lived well alongside each other.

During our week-long retreat we will take time to explore the vast beauty and dynamic landscapes of Kona and the island and make the most of our days together.

Enjoy a stay at the Royal Kona Resort where we’ll rise with the sun, follow the tides, and soak up sunsets overlooking the ocean.

Ground and refresh with daily yoga and guided vipasssana and mindful mediations, explore and expand as we explore the island both above and below the ocean, and get creative in lei and art workshops. We’ll get out and about for live music and meals at the best restaurants and local jewels, and connect and give back to the community in a variety of activities and a volunteer project and day.

We’ll get out on the ocean to explore the coast and connect with the local wildlife in a snorkeling and diving adventure from the boat, and adventure often throughout the retreat week.

The Big Island is one of the most diverse and stunning locales in Hawaii and the world, and we cannot wait to share a long week together living Aloha on the island that stole our hearts many moons ago. Take time practice, explore, and relax on the beach in a well-rounded retreat week and island adventure, and we’ll see you on the mat, on the beach, and on the water next July 7th-14th, 2024.

Expect longer holds, break-downs of alignment and postures, and a focus on the breath. Classes are appropriate for all levels from beginners to advanced practitioners and teachers. We ask students to be truly curious and expect to take a deep and joyful dive into the practice and their own inner ecology and wilderness.

Hawaii //The Big Island

Welcome to the Island of Hawaiʻi

The island of Hawaiʻi is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain. Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined (hence, its nickname, “Big Island”), its sheer size is awe-inspiring. You can travel through all but four of the world's different climate zones here, ranging from Wet Tropical to Polar Tundra, a result of the shielding effect and elevations of the massive volcanoes Maunakea and Maunaloa.

From the many geological features at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park to the snow-capped heights of Maunakea; from the lush valleys of the Hilo and Hāmākua Coasts to the jet-black sands of Punaluʻu Beach, the island of Hawaiʻi is an unrivaled expression of the power of nature. However you decide to experience the island, it is sure to leave you humbled! Check out the island of Hawaiʻi's regions to explore this vast island.

Kailua-Kona

Kona

The sunny Kona District stretches almost two-thirds of the entire West side of the island of Hawaiʻi—from just south of ʻAnaehoʻomalu Bay (Waikoloa Beach Resort) to Manukā Park (Kaʻū). Along this expansive area, you’ll find everything from coffee farms to historic Hawaiian landmarks. In fact, King Kamehameha actually spent his final years in Kailua-Kona.

Home to shops, restaurants and nightlife, you can conveniently take a walking tour of Kona’s history at places like Huliheʻe Palace, Mokuʻaikaua Church and the Ahuʻena Heiau.

Other significant historic places include Kealakekua Bay to the south, where Captain James Cook first set foot on the island in 1778 and where he was eventually killed. South of Kealakekua Bay is Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, a well-restored Hawaiian “place of refuge.” North of Kailua-Kona is the Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historic Park, a 1160-acre park that lets you explore early heiau (temples), fishponds and petroglyphs.

Shielded from winds by Maunaloa, south Kona’s calm and clear waters are perfect for snorkeling, diving, sailing and spotting dolphins and honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles).

One of Kona’s most memorable experiences is going on a manta ray boat tour to scuba or snorkel with these gentle, graceful sea creatures. Kona is also famous for its deep-sea fishing, hosting the International Billfish Tournament (August) every year.

And on land, don't forget to travel to the cooler upland slopes of town like Hōlualoa, where you can sample the distinctive flavors of 100% Kona coffee, which is what Kona is famous for!

This trip was so great!! I had the pleasure of attending this trip in the past and couldn't wait to attend again. things have only gotten better since I last went. All of the accommodations were great, close to shops and events, and the activities are well thought out and things I would not have thought of myself. The paddle along the cliff sides is breathtaking, and the VIP experience at Cova d'en Xoroi is a once in a lifetime experience. i wouldn't hesitate to attend more Trips with Mary Susan.

Thank you, Mary for the experience of a lifetime! Mary was very prepared for any and all circumstances during our many adventures, most of which I can personally say gave me the assurance and comfort to have the best day ever on our excursions. Mary provided all dietary accommodations offered at each food venue, gave valuable insights on local customs and celebrations, personally vetted and obtained trusting relationships with all activity guides, prioritized safety protocols, and prepared a backup plan for all the weather interruptions on the trip. More importantly, at each major point in the trip she was conscious of each person’s needs for well being and rest. I personally could not have had a successful boating excursion without her peppermint oil and her guidance on how to position oneself on the boat. I also appreciated when, after seeing our state of being after a full day, she offered a lovely and deeply thoughtful meditation instead of her personalized yoga class (which I can attest gives invaluable insight into improving foundational yoga poses). I want to note that her yoga practice is not strictly abiding, and she values the allowance and space to move in a way that suits each body and mind. With no stone unturned, she offered a wide array of accessible yoga and meditation resources after the trip with thoughtful detail via email, and shared amazing photos that we could all view on all devices. Everyday offered something new and exciting, as she allowed space on the itinerary to offer some fun evening activities based on special events. We were in awe of Barcelona and Menorca for its beauty and its people. I’m grateful for Mary’s nurturing and knowledgeable approach to all her activities, as well as the friendships formed with each lovely woman on the trip. If you want countless opportunities for something your soul can smile about, I would go on one of her adventures.
