“The labyrinth is a spiritual tool that has many applications in various settings. It reduces stress, quiets the mind, and opens the heart. It is a walking meditation, a path to prayer and a blueprint where psyche meets Spirit.” Reverend Lauren Artress, Episcopal priest, author, and foundress of Veriditas an organization dedicated to teaching about the Labyrinth Experience.
Bethany Retreat Center is home to a 7 Circuit Chalice Classical Labyrinth.
The labyrinth is a divine imprint found in many cultures around the world. The labyrinth is not a maze, it has only one path so there are no tricks to it and no dead ends. The path becomes a mirror for where we are in our lives. The rhythm of walking, placing one foot in front of the other, quiets the mind, relaxes the body, and refreshes the spirit. Walk it with an open heart and an open mind resting in the center to listen for God.
Sister Suzanne Thibault, C.A., resident retreat director at Bethany, has lived at Bethany Retreat Center since it was established. She has been directing retreats for all ages since 1987. Using education, process activities and reflection techniques, Sr. Suzanne has the ability to bring the faith journey alive and make it relevant to today. The deep heritage of the labyrinth tradition took root in her spirituality when the labyrinth was built at Bethany Retreat Center in the early 1990s.
