Lemosho Route 8 Days

Day 1

Arrival Day: Kilimanjaro International Airport - Moshi

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and meet our transfer crew to travel to the Chanya Lodge in Moshi and meet with your climbing manager and your main guide. During this meeting you will also have a briefing on what to expect on Day 1 of your trek and go over equipment in preparation for the big day! You will then retire to you hotel room after dinner to get a full night's rest.

Day 2

Trekking Day 1: Moshi to Forest Camp

Elevation gain: 7,742 ft to 9,498 ft - Hiking time: 3-4 hours

Today we start out by heading from Chanya Lodge to the Londorossi Gate, the starting point of Lemosho Trail. The Lemosho Route starts in the Afromontane Rainforest, one of the four climate zones that you will experience on Mt. Kilimanjaro. Make sure to keep your eyes open for the different animal species in the damp and dense rainforest. You will arrive at Forest Camp where you will spend the night.

Day 3

Trekking Day 2: Forest Camp to Moir Hut

Elevation gain: 9,498ft to 11,500ft - Hiking time: 5-6 hours

From the forest camp, you will ascend through a podocarpus and juniper forest and then emerge into heather draped volcanic rock and Shira Plateau, that was once Kilimanjaro's third peak before it collapsed. You will arrive at camp by mid-afternoon and arrive for your overnight stay at Moir Hut. Moir camp is a run-down pyramid shaped wooden hut situated on the Shira Plateau.

Day 4

Trekking Day 3: Moir Hut Camp to Barranco Camp

Elevation gain: 13,800 ft to 15, 223 ft (Lava Tower) - down to 13, 044 ft - Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

From Moir camp, you will traverse the slopes of Kibo. Because of extreme temperature changes, very little flora and vegetation exists in this part of the mountain. You will enjoy lunch close to a volcanic rock formation known as Lava Tower, before you begin your descent to Barranco camp in the afternoon. During this part of the hike, you will see an area known as "Garden of Senecios". The Barranco valley is one of the most beautiful areas of the entire trail. You will camp overnight at Barranco Camp.

Day 5

Trekking Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Elevation Gain: 13,044 ft to 13,123 ft. - Hiking Time: 4-5 Hours

Today is a relatively short day to reach Karanga Camp after climbing the steep Barranco Wall. Be prepared for this challenging section of the trek to use all four limbs to cross the wall to the top of the Karanga Valley. From here you will encounter many inclines and declines to Karanga Camp. We choose to stay at Karanga Camp in order to help with safe altitude acclimatization. You will spend the night at Karanga Camp.

Day 6

Trekking Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation Gain: 15,288 ft to 19,341 ft, 3 miles ascent, 7 miles descent - Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent, 4-6 hours descent

Day 5 consists of another half day ascending to Barafu Camp. Lunch will again be enjoyed at this high camp, so that your group will have plenty of time to rest before making your way to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. This area is a desolate alpine desert, so be prepared for strong winds that will blow through camp. After enjoying an early dinner you will spend the night in Barafu Camp. Be sure to take in the incredible views of Mawenzi peak.

Day 7

Trekking Day 6: Barafu Camp to the Summit to Mweka Camp

Elevation gain: 12,467 ft to 19,341ft to 5,380 ft - Hiking time: ascent 5-6 hours decent 4-5 hours

On day 6 of the trek, you will leave camp just before midnight for the final summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro! Today will be the most mentally and physically taxing day yet, but if you stay focused on the end goal, you will be able to enjoy one of the most incredible sunrises you have ever seen. This is the windiest and coldest section of your journey. By the time you reach Stella Point, the sun should be starting rise. Shortly after Stella Peak, you will be in your final ascend to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa!! After a short celebration, you will descend polepole (slowly in Swahili) while enjoying the rainforest scenery as you make your way towards Mweka Camp, where you will arrive just before dusk for a good night's rest.

Day 8

Trekking Day 7: Mweka Camp to Moshi

Hiking Time: 4-7 hours

On the final day of your trek on the mountain, you will descend through the montane forest after breakfast and around midday you will be picked up and transferred back to the Chanya Lodge for a hot shower, celebration of your accomplishment, certificate ceremony and the memorable tipping ceremony, where you can show your appreciation to your Kilimanjaro Crew! Now you can enjoy a good night's rest after this huge accomplishment.

Day 9

Departure Day: Moshi - Kilimanjaro International Airport
