      About Luana Rubin

Color inspires and informs every aspect of my work. I see hues in the landscape, in reflections and shadows, enriching my paintings as well as my quilts. Textile art allows me to use collage, painting, stitching, and embellishment to express dramatic textures and imagery, expressing the life force and symbolism of the subject. I am drawn to bold uses of complementary colors and luminous value contrasts, to draw the viewer’s eye through layers of meaning.

My work is consciously designed to have three levels of experience for the viewer – drawing them in from a distance, expressing a story, and then revealing small messages stitched into unexpected places. The foundation of my work has developed from my career as a fashion designer, 16 years of live figure painting, and decades of travel and wildlife photography. As an activist artist, my work has a narrative about topics such as environmental pollution, climate change, human rights, and the power of compassion.

About Atelier: In 1906, the first manufactory was established in Florence. Today, the tradition persists, crafting invaluable silk velvets and brocades in the identical manner, exclusively by hand, utilizing ancient Jacquard looms. The overarching goal remains unaltered: to perpetuate the artistry of weaving esteemed textiles.

Here, we will immerse ourselves in the rich history and intricate artistry of textiles, guided by knowledgeable experts who will illuminate the significance of each exhibit. From ancient weaving techniques to modern innovations, the museum offers a comprehensive journey through the evolution of textile craftsmanship.

As we explore the museum's vast collection, we will encounter a diverse array of textiles, ranging from luxurious fabrics to everyday textiles, each bearing its own story and cultural significance. From delicate lacework to vibrant tapestries, every piece reflects the creativity and ingenuity of generations of artisans.

Our guided visit will delve deep into the museum's exhibits, providing insight into the cultural, social, and economic importance of textiles throughout history. We will learn about the traditional methods of textile production, including spinning, weaving, and dyeing, and gain an appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in creating these intricate works of art.

The afternoon presents an opportunity for leisure and socializing, allowing guests to unwind and enjoy the company of fellow travelers in a relaxed setting. Whether strolling through the charming streets of Florence or simply indulging in a leisurely café experience, this time is yours to savor at your own pace.

      Day 5 - Monday, Dec 9th, 2024

This morning we will embark on a guided visit to the Galleria del Costume, also known as the Museum of Costume and Fashion. Situated in the heart of this historic city, the museum offers a fascinating journey through the evolution of fashion and style, spanning centuries of sartorial history.

Led by our knowledgeable guide, we will delve into the museum's extensive collection, which showcases a diverse array of garments, accessories, and textiles from different eras and cultures. Day 6 - Tuesday, Dec 10th, 2024

We will depart for Venice (3 Hour Drive) and upon arrival at the hotel, guests will be transported via private water taxis. Later, we will visit an Atelier to explore its fascinating exhibits and witness the intricate craftsmanship firsthand.

      Day 7 - Wednesday, Dec 11th, 2024

We will embark on a captivating journey to the Center for the History of Textiles and Costume, immersing ourselves in the rich tapestry of Venice's textile heritage. Located within the heart of this historic city, the center offers a treasure trove of knowledge and insight into the evolution of textile and costume design throughout the ages.

Led by our expert guide, we will delve into the center's extensive collection, which spans centuries of Venetian craftsmanship and creativity. From sumptuous fabrics adorned with intricate embroidery to elaborate period costumes worn by Venetian nobility, each exhibit showcases the exquisite artistry and cultural significance of Venice's textile traditions.

Engage in a visit to an atelier within their studio space.

About Atelier:  The origins of a family deeply rooted in the textile industry can be traced back to 1499. An artwork from that era, depicting "The capture of St. Mark in the synagogue," highlights the involvement of noblemen, including one identified as a weaver. The current Tessitura, established in 1875, saw its inception through the efforts of an individual who repurposed looms and machinery once utilized by the Silk Guild of the Republic of Venice. Historical documentation suggests that weavers associated with this lineage may have been active as early as the 18th century.

Enjoy some free time to shop and wander around Venice.

Without a doubt, this is one trip I will be talking about for a very long time and I strongly feel that all credit is due to Lorna. From the first hug of greeting at the airport to the final farewell, Lorna went above and beyond to ensure that our experience was memorable. The hotels were comfortable and conveniently located, the itinerary was well-paced and provided a variety of experiences, and the food….oh, the food was truly amazing. If you want to see the sights of Italy, you can have any number of tours from which to choose, but if you want to truly experience your destination, I highly recommend Lorna and her company.

It is almost impossible to express how truly wonderful this trip was. Our tour director, Lorna, was so knowledgeable, both in terms of the major sights/experiences of each area we visited and with the local guides and lesser known places to see, eat at, and adventure. It was 15 days of non-stop pleasure: thrilling views, wonderful food, incredible art and sculpture, fascinating history, fun shopping - I could go on and on. The small group of 8 women made the trip so much more enjoyable, as we all got to know one another and look out for one another. We became a cohesive unit, and that just enhanced everything else. What a great idea to have such a small tour! This also allowed Lorna to make adjustments on the fly as circumstances evolved and weather changed, so we got to see it all. I can't recommend highly enough to go on one of these small group Italy tours. It was the experience of a lifetime.

I have been the the UK twice. I have been to Europe numerous times with family and with other tours. This trip was the BEST experience! Lorna Holland is a bigger than life character. She is fun, bubbly, experienced, and an all around great tour guide. One of her talents is the way she can adapt to unexpected or problematic situations without missing a beat. One of the things I liked best about this tour is how we ended up in the out-of-the-way areas of the famous cities we were in. This is something big tours can't provide. We also ate where the locals ate. The food was divine. The accommodations were super. Being on a Ladies Only tour was also very special. Women act differently when men aren't around. There is more camaraderie, more fun, and more silliness. I highly recommend this tour, especially if you need to get away to relax and rejuvenate.

Wow! The trip was sensational. Lorna spoiled us. The entire experience was so much more than I expected--wonderful sites, food, and experiences. Any future travel will be measured against our Ladies Only Trip to Italy. Let's do it again.
