About this trip

This day trip features a visit to the Country's third oldest city of Georgetown, SC.  Founded in 1734, Georgetown was once one of the wealthiest cities of it's time due to the production of rice and indigo.  Located at the confluence of four rivers that feed into the Winyah Bay, Georgetown's Historic Harborwalk offers an opportunity to enjoy lunch on your own at several restaurants, spend a little time shopping (there are some really fun shops) or visit the Rice Museum or newly renovated South Carolina Maritime Museum.    Following the visit to Georgetown, we pay a visit to the fascinating Hobcow Barony  for a two hour guided tour.  Hobcow Barony is a privately owned 16,000 acre research and historical reserve.   Tour Guides join our bus for a tour that showcases the diverse low country  ecosystem along with the history of the reserve from its’ plantation days of indigo and rice production to more recent history when it was a place of great social and political gatherings at the home of Wall St. Financier, Bernard Baruch.  Stops along the tour include the historic Hobcow House, the Friendfield  Village, a 19th-century slave village and the Discovery Center.  I toured the Friendfield Village two years ago and can tell you that it is a fascinating interpretation!

I love to travel so in my partially retired life I decided to adapt my passion for travel along with 25 years of experience in Travel & Tourism to create Trips by Patty. I received a BA in American History from UNC-Chapel Hill. Not knowing what I was going to do with that degree, I started working as a desk clerk at a hotel in Raleigh. I enjoyed the hotel business and the career path began. Hotel operations and sales, Convention Center operations and marketing, destination marketing with a Convention Visitors Bureau and even a stint as a tour guide. What happened to the history degree? Well, many times when I am escorting my trips I share the history of the destinations we visit. It's a great feeling to take your career skills and adapt them to your own small business. I love what I do and hope you'll join me on a trip one day!

For me, there was not enough information given about the house and the man that built it. We spent the better part of two days in the bus traveling and only spent about two hours touring the house. And for me, but not my wife, there was way too much time allotted for shopping. I can appreciate those who enjoyed the Downton Abbey display, but I had not watched the tv show and would much rather spent time in the Biltmore house or on the grounds. I did get some information from photographs and writings on the wall of the hotel and from the lecture in the church in the village. But, with so much to learn, I did not think we allocated our time efficiently. Jim Gunther

This trip was alot of fun. Patty did a great job organizing this event. Looking forward to another trip in 2020.
This was a fun trip. We had a great time with friends and thoroughly enjoyed the experience at Mike's Farm. Patty did a great job organizing this trip for us!
A fun experience. We would definitely go again. The southern cooking was plentiful and delicious. We were excited to see a patriotic and religious light show. A great family outing.
